Mamelodi Sundowns vs Marumo Gallants: Clash of Expectations

Mamelodi Sundowns head into their clash with Marumo Gallants carrying the weight of expectation – and a few bruises.

The African champions remain unbeaten this season, but the sheen isn’t spotless. Five goals conceded in their last three competitive matches have opened a small crack in an otherwise imposing armour. Gallants, winless in the league but stubborn by nature, will try to drive a wedge straight into it.

Sundowns: Goals flowing, doubts at the back

Teboho Mokoena has been the big concern since he picked up a knock in the MTN8 quarter-final win over Polokwane City. That injury kept him out of the match against Kaizer Chiefs and casts a shadow over Sundowns’ midfield balance. If he is passed fit, he walks straight back into the likely XI. If not, it’s a sizeable hole.

Siyanda Ndlovu, the new signing, is moving in the opposite direction. Over a minor niggle, he came off the bench against Chiefs and is now pushing hard for a first start. Cassius Mailula is doing the same, but with an even louder argument: he has stepped off the bench to score crucial goals in Sundowns’ last two outings. Impact player, yes. But he’s starting to look like a player who deserves the whistle from minute one.

A possible Sundowns XI under Miguel Cardoso reads:

Williams; Mudau, Johannes, Kekana, Basadien; Mokoena, Allende, Van Wyk; Ndlovu, Mkhulise; Mailula.

It’s a line-up built to dominate the ball and punish mistakes. The problem? That recent tendency to give opponents a sniff. Cardoso knows Gallants will not need a second invitation.

Gallants stuck in reverse – but dangerous

Life under new head coach Phuti Mohafe has started exactly how nobody at Marumo Gallants wanted. One point from two league games, and that solitary point came against newly promoted Kruger United. The relegation fight that stalked them last season is already lurking in the rear-view mirror again.

They at least found the net last time out. Thapelo Dhludhlu’s late consolation in a 3-1 defeat to Stellenbosch finally got them off the mark in front of goal, a small step in a difficult start.

Yet Cardoso is not buying the narrative of a soft touch.

“First of all, Marumo had and has players that are very interesting,” the Sundowns coach said. “Second, it's true, the coach in the past made life difficult for Sundowns.”

That history matters. Mohafe knows how to frustrate the Brazilians, and Gallants’ squad still carries enough bite to turn a tight game.

History on Sundowns’ side, scars on Gallants’ memory

On paper, the league record is brutal. Sundowns have never lost to Gallants in PSL action: 10 wins for the champions, five draws, no defeats. The most recent league meeting ended 3-1 to Sundowns on 17 March 2026.

But the story shifts when cups enter the picture. On 5 October 2025, Gallants held Sundowns to a 0-0 draw in the Carling Knockout Cup and then edged them 7-6 on penalties after extra time. That night still glows for Gallants – proof that they can drag the champions into deep water and keep them there.

They will cling to that memory again. Their current form, though, tells a harsher truth: L D D D D. Five games without a win, but four of those drawn. Hard to beat, not yet sharp enough to finish the job.

Sundowns’ own run – D W W D L – shows more edge but less control than usual. The goals are there. The clean sheets are not.

A clash of needs

Gallants would happily take a draw off the African champions. A point, a clean sheet, and a reminder that they can still bloody the nose of the division’s heavyweights would steady nerves around Mohafe’s project.

Sundowns will think differently. Unbeaten or not, a side of their stature, with their resources and history in this fixture, expects three points. Especially against a team still staring nervously at the wrong end of the table.

The patterns are clear. Sundowns dominate Gallants in the league. Gallants find a way to drag them into a fight in the cups. Now they meet again with both sides searching for something: Gallants for liftoff, Sundowns for defensive certainty.
