Liverpool's Pursuit of Bradley Barcola Faces Bayern Munich Challenge

Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has run straight into one of European football’s biggest roadblocks: Bayern Munich.

What began as a bold Anfield play for Paris Saint-Germain’s electric winger is now tangled in a chain reaction that stretches from Merseyside to Munich and all the way to the Bernabeu.

Liverpool’s “top, top, top target”

The interest from Liverpool is not a whisper on the fringes of the rumour mill. On July 9, transfer reporter Graeme Bailey revealed that Liverpool are actively pushing to bring Barcola in this summer, with the 21-year-old identified as a key piece in Andoni Iraola’s rebuild.

Barcola has already made his move internally. Sources indicate he has told PSG he wants out this summer, a stance that has not gone down lightly in Paris. PSG, fresh from a season in which they won both Ligue 1 and the Champions League, are determined to keep the France international and are preparing talks over a new contract.

The problem for Liverpool is simple and brutal: price.

PSG are expected to demand at least €150m (£128m, $170.5m) if they are forced to sell. That figure alone would make Barcola one of the most expensive players in history and instantly narrows the field of realistic buyers.

Despite that, Fabrizio Romano has been unwavering in his assessment of Liverpool’s intent. Speaking on his YouTube channel this week, he stressed that Barcola is not just an option, but the club’s priority for the winger role.

Romano underlined that Barcola has been Liverpool’s “top, top, top target” for months and that the club “love” the player. The finances may be daunting, he admitted, but the desire from Liverpool is not in doubt. He also knocked down talk of Barcelona being in the race, pointing out that Jorge Mendes is not Barcola’s agent.

Liverpool, then, are serious. But they are not alone anymore.

Bayern step into the frame

In Germany, the situation has shifted. Bayern Munich, already juggling one high-profile winger in Michael Olise, are now positioning themselves in the background of the Barcola saga.

Real Madrid want Olise. Not just as a name on a list, but as a priority, with club president Florentino Perez personally keen on the Bayern wide man. If Los Blancos manage to prise Olise away from Munich, the Bundesliga champions will need a replacement who can step straight into a front line built to win now.

That is where Barcola comes in.

Bild journalist Christian Falk reports that Barcola is firmly on Bayern’s shortlist as a potential successor to Olise. Falk, writing on his CFBayernInsider platform, revealed that Bayern have admired Barcola for some time. He says the club considered signing him last summer and even the summer before that, viewing the 23-year-old as a very interesting long-term option for the Allianz Arena.

The admiration, however, collides with reality.

Falk is clear: at the moment, Bayern have “no chance” of signing Barcola. PSG are pushing a new contract, and the same €150m price tag that looms over Liverpool also blocks Bayern’s path. Right now, the door is barely open.

Yet the Bavarians are thinking beyond this window.

A transfer race that could roll into 2025

The key detail lies in the contracts. Barcola’s current deal with PSG runs to 2028, one year shorter than Olise’s terms at Bayern. That gap could dictate the tempo of this saga.

Falk outlines a scenario that will not comfort Liverpool. If Barcola is not sold this summer — whether to Liverpool or another club with the financial power to meet PSG’s demands — and if Bayern are eventually forced to sell Olise, the picture changes dramatically next year.

With one year less on his contract in 2025, Barcola becomes a different proposition. PSG would face a decision they can currently delay: hold firm and risk his value dipping, or cash in at a reduced, more accessible fee.

That is the moment Bayern are quietly circling.

Falk believes Barcola would fit Bayern “perfectly,” and not only on the pitch. The winger currently earns around €7m-8m gross in Paris, roughly half of Olise’s salary in Munich. For a club that still watches its wage structure, that kind of profile is gold dust — elite talent, big upside, and comparatively modest pay.

For Liverpool, that is the danger. Right now, they are the club pushing hardest. Romano insists they remain “super keen” and have not moved off Barcola as their primary wide target. But the numbers are punishing, and every week that passes without a breakthrough nudges the situation closer to the long game Bayern appear ready to play.

A battle of timing and nerve

PSG want to keep their man. Liverpool want to break the bank’s limits without shattering them. Bayern are content to lurk in the shadows until the market swings in their favour. Real Madrid, by chasing Olise, hold the trigger that could set off the next phase.

Barcola, meanwhile, has already made his stance clear: he wants a move this summer.

If Liverpool cannot find a way through PSG’s demands now, they may discover in a year’s time that the race for their “top, top, top target” no longer runs only through Paris — but through Munich as well.
