Liverpool's Winger Pursuit: Rayan and Barcola Options

Liverpool are moving early to solve a looming problem out wide – and they have drawn a clear line through one name in particular.

The club have agreed personal terms “in principle” with Bournemouth’s Brazilian winger Rayan, contingent on the south-coast side deciding to cash in on the teenager this summer. The framework is there, waiting on Bournemouth’s call.

This is not a one-track pursuit. While talks and positioning continue around Rayan, Liverpool are also working on a deal for Bradley Barcola at PSG, with a well-placed source on X urging supporters to keep a close watch on how the story unfolds. The recruitment team are clearly trying to stay ahead of a tightening market.

Rayan has given them good reason to act. At just 19, operating primarily from the right, he put together a sharp first half-season in the Premier League: five goals and two assists in 15 appearances. Those numbers carry extra weight in a campaign that has not been kind to wingers, with the division tilting towards power, set-pieces and territory rather than one‑v‑one artistry.

He has cut through that trend. Direct, inventive, and unfazed by the league’s physical edge, he has shown enough to convince top clubs that his ceiling is high, even if he is not yet the finished article.

That last point matters. Inside the game, there is an understanding that a move for Rayan would not generate the same buzz as a signing like Yan Diomande. The Ivorian, after a year in Germany, is widely viewed as further along in his development, more polished and closer to elite level right now.

But the market is moving fast – and not in Liverpool’s favour. Diomande is reportedly closing in on a switch to Real Madrid. PSG, meanwhile, are pushing to land Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche. As the top-end options are picked off, the pool of realistic, high-upside wide forwards shrinks.

That is where the calculation sharpens. Miss out on both Rayan and Barcola and the list of alternatives suddenly looks thinner, dropping – with all due respect – towards the likes of Yankuba Minteh and Matias Fernandez-Pardo. Talented, yes, but not the kind of ready-to-impact names that match Liverpool’s recent transfer profile.

The club’s hierarchy are acutely aware of that cliff edge. Even so, there is no sense that Liverpool will attempt a double swoop for Rayan and Barcola. The admiration for both is genuine, but the finances are not what they were 12 months ago.

Last summer, Liverpool flexed. Record-breaking deals for Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak in the same window underlined the club’s willingness to spend aggressively when the right players became available. That level of outlay is not expected to be repeated in the current market.

This time, the budget has to stretch further. The squad still needs reinforcing in several areas, and Andoni Iraola must be backed with additional depth before the 2026/27 season kicks off. One marquee winger, not two, is the realistic outcome.

Inside the recruitment department, Bradley Barcola is understood to sit at the top of the attacking shortlist. Richard Hughes and his team have made him a central target, with a deal effectively prepared in case negotiations with PSG open up in the right way. The sense is clear: if the French champions soften their stance, Liverpool will be ready.

Rayan, then, looks like the parallel lane – a serious, structured option should the Barcola route become blocked or too expensive. Personal terms “in principle” mean Liverpool can move quickly if Bournemouth indicate a willingness to sell.

In a summer where wide players are being snapped up by Europe’s biggest clubs, that speed might be the difference between Liverpool refreshing their wings with genuine quality or being forced to shop a tier below.
