Liverpool in Talks with Valencia for Harvey Elliott Loan

Liverpool are in talks with Valencia over a loan move for Harvey Elliott as the transfer window ticks towards Tuesday night’s deadline.

The 23-year-old has attracted interest from a number of clubs across the summer, but Valencia have moved to the front of the queue ahead of the 11pm cut-off on September 1. Discussions are now under way over a temporary deal for the attacking midfielder.

Elliott is understood to have spoken directly with Valencia head coach Carlos Corberan about his potential role at Mestalla. Any loan could be tied to a Liverpool contract extension, a move designed to protect the value of the former England Under-21 international, whose current deal runs until the summer of 2028.

Right now, he finds himself on the outside looking in at Anfield. Elliott has yet to make a match-day squad under new head coach Andoni Iraola, a continuation of a frustrating spell last season when he spent the campaign at Aston Villa but rarely featured.

He did make one brief cameo for Liverpool 12 months ago, coming on late in a 3-2 win at Newcastle. That appearance locked him in for the first half of the season and prevented another move in the January window.

Villa, though, were careful. Determined not to trigger an obligation-to-buy clause, they ensured Elliott never reached the 10-game threshold that would have activated a permanent £35m transfer. While Unai Emery’s side went on to lift the Europa League, Elliott remained on the fringes, watching rather than driving the success at Villa Park.

Back at Liverpool for the pre-season tour of the United States, the uncertainty followed him. Speaking in New York after a 1-0 win over Wrexham on July 30, he admitted he was wrestling with his next step.

“I think I need to be more kind of cautious of my decisions,” he said. “Ultimately, I'm still wanting to be selfish, within that aspect of doing what's right for me, and whether I'm staying here and fighting for my place, or whether that's potentially going elsewhere, I'm still unsure at this moment in time until I get some more intel."

Liverpool had been expecting Valencia to firm up their interest before the weekend. That call has now come, and negotiations over a loan are under way.

Elliott joined his boyhood club from Fulham in the summer of 2019 and has already made 149 appearances in red. Whether the next chapter of his career is written on Merseyside or in Mestalla now rests on how quickly those talks progress before the window slams shut.
