Liverpool Target Yan Diomande Amid Leipzig's High Price Tag

Yan Diomande has set his sights on Anfield. RB Leipzig, though, have slapped a price tag on him that would test even Liverpool’s nerve.

The 19-year-old Ivory Coast winger is emerging as Liverpool’s preferred heir to Mohamed Salah, with multiple sources indicating that Fenway Sports Group have made him a priority target for this summer. Liverpool’s interest is not new; their recruitment team have tracked Diomande for some time and moved quickly once it became clear Salah will depart.

Talks are already under way. Diomande’s representatives have been in contact with Liverpool, and, according to The i Paper, the player’s own preference is clear: he wants the move, and he wants the responsibility of stepping into Salah’s role on the right.

Paris Saint-Germain are circling as well, drawn by the same blend of pace, flair and end-product that has lit up the Bundesliga. Yet the sense from those close to the situation is that Liverpool sit in pole position in the player’s mind.

That is only half the battle.

Liverpool’s Salah plan meets Leipzig’s resolve

The i Paper reports that Liverpool have opened discussions with RB Leipzig over a transfer, but the German club are standing firm. Leipzig are said to want £120m for Diomande, while Bild have suggested the figure could climb as high as €150m (£129.6m, $174.5m).

At those numbers, any deal becomes a high-wire act. Liverpool see Diomande as a long-term cornerstone of their next attacking line, yet FSG have always operated with clear financial parameters. Something has to give: either Leipzig soften, or Liverpool walk away.

For now, Leipzig are in no mood to roll over. TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey reports that the Bundesliga side want to keep Diomande and are prepared to offer him a new contract, complete with a release clause. The message from the Red Bull Arena is that they would prefer the teenager to stay for at least one more season.

Crucially, Diomande is not agitating for a move. He is open to Liverpool. He likes the idea of becoming Salah’s successor. But he is not forcing Leipzig’s hand, and that strengthens the German club’s position at the negotiating table.

Iraola’s backing, FSG’s dilemma

Inside Liverpool, the picture is straightforward. New head coach Andoni Iraola is fully behind the pursuit. He sees Diomande as a winger who can stretch defences, press aggressively and grow into the sort of talismanic role Salah has owned for years.

The recruitment department agree. The profile fits: young, elite upside, already performing at a high level in a major European league. The timing fits too, with Salah’s exit creating a rare vacancy in one of the most coveted attacking positions in world football.

The complication is the fee. FSG have shown they will pay big money when the conviction is absolute, but Leipzig’s current demands would push Diomande into the very top bracket of transfers in Liverpool’s history. With no indication yet that Leipzig are ready to compromise, the deal sits at a standstill.

If the German club hold their line and secure that new contract, Liverpool may be forced to pivot to alternative right-wing targets. The club cannot afford to enter the new season without a clear plan to replace Salah’s goals, assists and sheer presence on that flank.

For Diomande, the situation is equally stark. The pathway to Anfield is open, the opportunity enormous. The question now is whether Leipzig’s valuation will slam that door shut for another year, or whether this is the summer Liverpool decide to bet big on the teenager they believe can carry Salah’s legacy into a new era.
