Liverpool Target Real Madrid Defender Raul Asencio

Liverpool’s summer rebuild has taken another twist, this time at the heart of defence.

While the headlines have circled almost obsessively around wide forwards and the pursuit of extra firepower, Real Madrid centre-back Raul Asencio has quietly emerged as a live option for Anfield. The door in Madrid has been nudged open. Liverpool have been invited to walk through it.

Asencio told he can go

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool have been “sounded out” over a potential move for the Spain international after he was informed he can leave the Bernabeu in this window. José Mourinho, now in charge at Real Madrid, is understood to rate Asencio but has made it clear he does not see a long-term role for him in his plans and has approved an exit.

That has put Liverpool on alert. Andoni Iraola is described as a long-time admirer of the defender, who offers the kind of experience Liverpool’s current crop of young centre-backs are still learning to acquire. Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet are both highly regarded at Anfield, but neither has logged serious minutes at the elite level.

For now, though, this is an opportunity rather than an active negotiation. TEAMtalk report that while Liverpool have monitored the situation and were receptive when Asencio’s camp made contact, the player’s determination to remain at Real Madrid has stalled any formal talks. He has not yet accepted that his future may lie away from the Santiago Bernabeu.

If that stance softens, Liverpool expect to be firmly in the conversation. The opening is there. It is Asencio who has to decide whether to step through it.

Attack still the priority

All of this plays out against a backdrop in which Liverpool’s primary focus remains the front line. The club have already moved decisively in attack, bringing in Victor Munoz from Osasuna and finally completing the long-anticipated signing of Jacquet from Rennes.

The plan is not to stop there. Liverpool want at least one more winger and have zeroed in on Bradley Barcola as their main attacking target. The Paris Saint-Germain wide man sits at the top of their list, with his PSG team-mate Ibrahim Mbaye also on the radar as the club look to deepen Iraola’s options in the wide areas.

The thinking is clear: inject pace, unpredictability and depth into the forward line while quietly reshaping the defence with a more experienced head if the right deal appears. Asencio fits that second brief. Barcola, very clearly, fits the first.

Barcola talks go official

On Monday, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Liverpool’s interest in Barcola has moved into a more serious phase. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano revealed that Liverpool and PSG are now engaged in “official club-to-club talks” over the winger.

Liverpool have informed PSG of their intention to bid, and the relationship between the clubs is described as good. The opening indications from Anfield, though, are some distance from the figures PSG had in mind. The gap on valuation is real, and it means this is not close to a “here we go” moment.

Romano stressed that the two clubs remain far apart on the financial side after the first round of discussions. Yet the dialogue will continue because both key parties in the deal want the same outcome. Liverpool want Barcola. Barcola, Romano says, “loves the idea of joining Liverpool” and is “super tempted” by the project. Personal terms are not expected to be an issue.

So the situation is clear. Liverpool push for Barcola while keeping the line open to Madrid. Asencio waits, still leaning towards staying where he is. Iraola, looking at a squad being reshaped in his image, knows one decision in Paris and another in the Spanish capital could define the balance of his first great Liverpool side.
