Liverpool's Rebuild Under Iraola: Late Window Moves

Liverpool’s late-window rebuild under Andoni Iraola is suddenly moving at pace, with a second deal reportedly lined up within hours of the first.

The club have endured a relatively subdued window so far, but the calm has given way to a flurry of movement as Tuesday’s deadline looms. Iraola has been clear: he wants more quality, more depth, and not just for the here and now.

Wide search, future focus

Liverpool’s main hunt has centred on the left wing as they prepare for life after Mohamed Salah. Bradley Barcola has emerged as the leading option, with talks said to have progressed quickly and an expectation that a deal could be wrapped up before the window shuts.

Ismaila Sarr has also entered the frame, flagged as a secondary wide target in the build-up to Saturday’s draw with Nottingham Forest. The message is obvious: Iraola wants serious competition and variety in the wide areas.

But the recruitment drive doesn’t stop there.

Earlier on Monday, reports claimed Liverpool had agreed a £30 million deal with Genk for goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans, a significant outlay on a position that already looked well stocked on paper. It underlined the club’s willingness to act decisively when they see long-term value.

N'Guessan deal agreed

Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have followed that up by striking an agreement for Saint-Etienne striker Djylian N'Guessan.

The 18-year-old has reportedly been given the green light to undergo a medical ahead of the deadline. The plan is not an immediate impact signing: N'Guessan is expected to link up with the Liverpool squad in the summer of 2027, a clear marker of the club’s long-term planning.

His contract at Saint-Etienne runs out next summer, and French outlet Foot Mercato has reported that the Ligue 2 side had already “opened the door” to his departure. Liverpool have stepped through it, adding another high-upside youngster to an emerging core of prospects being assembled at Anfield.

This is the pattern under Iraola and the current recruitment team: build for tomorrow while still arming the first team for a title push today.

Iraola’s transfer stance

Speaking recently, Iraola made it clear that while a winger was the headline priority, Liverpool’s plans were never limited to one position.

“In the end there are certain things that you can do, certain things that we don’t know if we can do,” he said, underlining the constant juggling act of a late-window market.

“It’s true that the priority has been to strengthen in the wide areas. Still we have four, five days, I’m sure if we can improve other areas, we will, but I don’t know how the market is going to finish.

“I cannot tell you. I have to be patient, the same as you. I want to know, believe me. It’s very uncomfortable for me. You are dealing with uncertainties all the time.”

Those uncertainties are now turning into concrete moves. A new goalkeeper, a teenage striker for the future, and at least one winger still in play.

Liverpool’s window was quiet. Now it’s anything but. The only real question left is how bold they’re prepared to be before the clock finally runs out.
