Liverpool Pursues Rayan as Barcola Interest Grows

Liverpool have taken a significant step in their summer planning by agreeing personal terms “in principle” with Bournemouth’s Brazilian winger Rayan, pending the Cherries’ willingness to sell.

The understanding, relayed by a reputable source on X, positions the 19-year-old as a live option for the Merseyside club as they work the market on two fronts, with Bradley Barcola of PSG also firmly on their radar. Supporters have been urged to keep a close watch as the story develops, with Liverpool’s recruitment team clearly bracing for a complex window in wide areas.

A teenager thriving in a brutal league

Rayan’s emergence has been one of the more eye-catching subplots of the Premier League season. Thrown into a division that has tilted sharply towards physicality, set-pieces and attritional contests, the right-sided forward still produced seven goal contributions – five goals and two assists – in just 15 appearances in his first half-season.

For a 19-year-old winger in a league that has not been kind to flair players this year, that output stands out. He has offered direct running, end product and a willingness to take responsibility in the final third, all while learning on the job in a Bournemouth side asked to punch upwards most weeks.

Liverpool’s interest reflects that profile. They need energy and incision in the wide roles, and Rayan ticks the boxes of age, upside and early proof that he can handle the Premier League’s intensity.

Not Diomande, not yet – but the market is shrinking

Set against that, there is an honest acknowledgement inside and outside the club that Rayan does not yet carry the same aura as Yan Diomande. The Ivorian, a year further on in his development after time in Germany, has been viewed in some quarters as the more polished, immediate-impact option.

That comparison may soon be academic. Diomande is reportedly on the verge of joining Real Madrid, a move that would remove one of the standout wide options from Liverpool’s list. At the same time, PSG are actively pursuing Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche, another talent who could have shaped this market.

The domino effect is clear. As elite clubs move quickly, the pool of realistic targets narrows. Miss on Rayan and Barcola, and Liverpool’s choices start to slide down a tier, towards names such as Yankuba Minteh and Matias Fernandez-Pardo. With respect to both, that is a different conversation in terms of readiness and ceiling for a side with Liverpool’s ambitions.

One marquee winger, not two

Inside Anfield, there is no expectation of a double swoop. The idea of Liverpool landing both Barcola and Rayan in the same window simply does not align with the financial reality of this summer.

The club’s hierarchy is operating under a tighter budget than last year, when they sanctioned record-breaking deals for Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak in the same window. That level of outlay is not on the table now. At the same time, Andoni Iraola needs reinforcements across the squad ahead of the 2026/27 season, not just in the wide positions.

Barcola remains at the forefront of Richard Hughes’ thinking. The PSG winger is clearly viewed as the primary target, and the sense is that Liverpool have that move mapped out as the first-choice play, subject to navigating talks with the French champions.

Rayan, then, shapes up as a high-level alternative rather than a partner signing. A deal that sits ready to be activated if negotiations with PSG stall or collapse.

The release clause clock

Timing matters. Bournemouth have installed a £130m release clause in Rayan’s contract, a figure that comes into effect in January, according to iPaper. That clause changes the landscape.

If Liverpool want him this summer, they will have to pay what has been described as “Barcola money” to prise him away from the south coast before that clause kicks in and hardens Bournemouth’s position. Wait too long, and the numbers become even more daunting.

So Liverpool stand at a familiar crossroads: push now for a young winger who has already shown he can live with the Premier League, or hold firm for their top target at PSG and risk watching the market close around them.

One thing is clear. With Diomande Madrid-bound and Akliouche on PSG’s radar, the room for error is shrinking fast.
