Liverpool Lose Orozco to Brighton as Transfer Deadline Approaches

Liverpool’s rebuild is creaking towards the deadline with more questions than answers and, now, one highly rated target slipping away.

With less than a week left of the window, the expectation around Anfield was that five or six fresh faces would arrive to reshape the squad. Instead, the reality is harsher: they may struggle even to properly replace Mohamed Salah, never mind overhaul the group.

Key players continue to attract interest from elsewhere. Stefan Bajcetic has been linked with a move away, while Cody Gakpo’s name has hovered over the exit column. That idea feels impossible unless sporting director Richard Hughes lands at least a couple of attackers before the window shuts. Right now, that business is nowhere near guaranteed.

All of it adds to a sense of urgency bordering on desperation. For some deals, it feels like now or never.

Orozco slips away

Amid the first-team uncertainty, Liverpool have quietly tried to keep one eye on the future. The club have pushed hard in recent seasons to refresh their academy, raiding other youth systems to bring in standout talents.

Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha are the clearest examples: both lured from rival academies, both now edging into first-team contention. Moves like those have helped sustain Liverpool’s reputation as one of the best pathways in Europe for young players trying to break into senior football.

That pathway stalled somewhat under Arne Slot, with fewer academy graduates getting meaningful chances. The arrival of Andoni Iraola is expected to change that dynamic, with a renewed emphasis on youth and intensity.

But one key piece of that plan has just slipped through their fingers.

“Matías Orozco (18) will be a new player for #Brighton. The deal closes for 4.8M$ + bonuses for 85% with Cali,” journalist Pipe Sierra reported on X. “The Colombian will travel tonight to Europe with his agent Leonardo Daza to complete the visa process, medical exams, and contract signing.”

Liverpool had tracked the midfielder and held talks over a deal, with Orozco widely viewed as the next youngster Hughes would bring into the system. For much of the summer, the Reds were effectively alone in the race.

Then Brighton moved. And Orozco chose the south coast.

Academy plan takes a hit

The setback comes after a year in which Liverpool put serious energy into their youth recruitment. Mor Talla Ndiaye, Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Samuel Martinez all arrived last season as part of a drive to deepen the talent pool beneath the first team.

Of that trio, Ndukwe has made the strongest impression. Liverpool were frustrated when he failed to secure enough points for a UK work permit, forcing the club to send him on loan to Levante to pick up senior minutes and build his case for a potential return in January.

Orozco was meant to follow that line of thinking: a high-upside teenager brought in early, developed carefully, then fed into Iraola’s high-intensity system. Instead, Brighton have stepped into a familiar role as the Premier League’s most efficient talent collectors.

For Liverpool, it means going back to the board. Another young midfielder must be found, another negotiation started, another plan rewritten with the clock ticking loudly in the background.

The academy’s status as one of England’s elite production lines remains intact for now. But with rivals like Brighton snapping up the same targets, Liverpool cannot afford many more near-misses in a window that already feels uncomfortably light on answers.
