Liverpool's Interest in Ibrahim Mbaye Stalls Amid Transfer Concerns

Liverpool’s chase for Ibrahim Mbaye has stalled before it ever really started, despite growing noise around the Senegal winger as the transfer window ticks towards its close.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen have both looked into a deal for the 18-year-old, but senior figures at Anfield insist the enquiry has not moved beyond that early stage. Club sources have dismissed claims that personal terms with Mbaye are already agreed, pushing back firmly against suggestions that a deal is close.

That leaves Liverpool in an awkward spot. They need attacking reinforcements. At least two forwards, by some internal estimations. Possibly three. Yet the market is inflated, the clock is running, and Paris Saint-Germain are thought to value Mbaye at around £43 million.

The numbers matter. Liverpool are already braced for a huge outlay on Bradley Barcola, a move that could climb beyond £120 million. Once that domino falls, the question becomes brutal in its simplicity: how much is left for another attacker?

Mbaye sits right in the middle of that debate. At 18, he is raw but highly regarded, a right-sided winger whose profile mirrors what Liverpool want from their wide players. As reported by Andy Jones, Mbaye relies on sharp acceleration and a sharp turn of pace to escape pressure, preferring to glide out of tight spaces rather than engage in physical duels. He drives forward with the ball, often creating chances for others instead of hunting shots for himself.

That detail matters for Liverpool’s planning. With the expectation that a central forward will shoulder the bulk of the goals — and Alexander Isak needing genuine support and rotation — the wide players are being cast more as creators than pure finishers. Facilitators on the flanks, in other words, feeding the penalty-box threat.

In that context, Mbaye looks a strong tactical fit. A winger who opens up the pitch, commits defenders, and supplies the final pass rather than demanding the final shot.

The price tag is heavy for a teenager, no question. Yet in this market, Liverpool may struggle to find a similar profile at a significantly lower fee. A £40m–£50m investment in a high-ceiling, right-sided winger could age well if his development tracks with expectation. Better, some at the club might argue, to shape that development in-house than watch him explode in value somewhere else.
