Lion City Sailors Sack Coach Jesus Casas Days Before SPL Season Opener

SINGAPORE – Lion City Sailors have stunned local football by sacking head coach Jesus Casas just five days before they open the new Singapore Premier League (SPL) campaign against Tampines Rovers.

The club announced the decision on Sept 1 with a brief, 30-word statement on Facebook, confirming that they had parted ways with the Spaniard and that assistant coach Varo Moreno will take charge of the first team until further notice.

No explanation. No farewell quotes. Just a clean break, days before the Community Shield.

Casas’ departure ends a tenure that barely had time to take shape. The former Iraq coach was only appointed in February, handed a long-term deal that ran until the end of the 2027-28 season with the reigning SPL champions.

It was a bold contract for a coach whose CV included work with several youth sides in Spain and a stint as assistant manager to Javi Gracia at English club Watford in early 2018. It now looks like a short-lived gamble.

Casas had also been on the radar in Singapore even before joining the Sailors. He was previously shortlisted for the national team job, which eventually went to Gavin Lee. His name has continued to circulate in Asian football circles: The Korea Herald recently reported that he had applied for the vacant South Korea national team role and was one of three candidates on the final shortlist.

While the Sailors have not linked his exit to any external opportunity, the timing adds another layer to an already intriguing situation.

His arrival in February came after another abrupt dismissal. Serbian coach Aleksandar Rankovic was sacked on Feb 6, a day after a 2-0 home defeat by Cambodian side Svay Rieng in the Asean Club Championship. That decision ended a 2½-year spell in which Rankovic delivered significant domestic success but failed to maintain the club’s rising continental profile.

Under Rankovic, the Sailors lifted the Singapore Cup for the third time and secured an SPL title. Yet he also presided over a group-stage exit in the Asian Champions League Two, a sharp contrast to the club’s dream run to the final of the same competition the previous season.

Domestic dominance, continental disappointment. And now, another reset.

On the pitch, the Sailors have remained the team to beat at home. On May 3, they clinched back-to-back SPL titles for the first time in their history, grinding out a 0-0 draw against Tampines Rovers. That point was enough to see them finish the season two points clear of the Stags.

Those same opponents now await again.

The Sailors and Tampines meet on Sept 6 in the Community Shield at Jalan Besar Stadium at 7.30pm, the traditional curtain-raiser to the 2026-27 SPL season. Moreno, thrust into the spotlight, will lead the champions out in a fixture that suddenly feels like more than just a ceremonial opener.

The league campaign then begins in earnest on Sept 12, when the Sailors face Hougang United at Bishan Stadium, also at 7.30pm.
