Lewis Koumas Shines Despite Liverpool's Defeat to AS Monaco
At Anfield on Sunday, the scoreline said defeat. For Lewis Koumas, the afternoon told a different story.
Handed a start in Liverpool’s 3-2 pre-season loss to AS Monaco, the 20-year-old Wales international was given a serious audition, staying on the pitch for 75 minutes and throwing himself into a contest that felt far more intense than a routine summer run-out.
This is what he has been working towards.
Koumas spent the second half of last season on loan at Hull City, a spell that toughened his game and sharpened his understanding of senior football. Back on Merseyside, he now finds himself training daily with Liverpool’s first-team regulars, and the impact is clear in both his confidence and his conditioning.
"It's always good and obviously I train with them every day, so it's always good to try to take bits of their game and put it into mine," he told Liverpoolfc.com, a line that underlines exactly where his focus lies: learning, copying the best habits, closing the gap.
He knows his body is responding too. "It's the best I've ever felt physically, so I've just got to keep training," he said, a simple sentence that sounds like a mantra for a young player trying to force his way into a ruthless elite environment.
On the touchline, Andoni Iraola’s message has been equally direct. The new boss wants intensity, aggression, and clarity of role, and Koumas is under no illusions about what is being asked of him.
"He is just encouraging me to just play my game, press, work hard and continue to try to adapt to how he wants us to play," Koumas explained. No tactical jargon, no hiding place: press, graft, adapt.
Back at Anfield, the setting hit him as much as the instructions. A pre-season friendly in name, but with fans back in decent voice, it offered something closer to a dress rehearsal than a gentle warm-up.
"It was really good to be back at Anfield with the fans. I thought they were great," he said. You could see it in his movement, too — the runs into the box, the willingness to keep showing even when the chances wouldn’t quite fall.
There were openings. Half-moments. Nearly chances. For a young forward, those are as important as goals in July.
"A few chances [for me]. I just [need to] keep getting in the area and they'll come hopefully," he added.
The result will fade quickly from memory. Whether Koumas can turn these minutes, this fitness, and this education under Iraola into a permanent place in the senior picture — that’s the storyline that will linger long after pre-season is over.
