Leanne Kiernan Joins Newcastle United: A New Chapter

Ireland forward Leanne Kiernan has completed a move to Newcastle United, swapping Merseyside for Tyneside in a deal that underlines the club’s growing ambition in the women’s game.

The 27-year-old joins the Magpies for an undisclosed fee after five years with Liverpool, where she carved out a reputation as a direct, hard-running attacker. She leaves Anfield with 76 appearances and 23 goals to her name, having spent the second half of last season on loan at Nottingham Forest in the Barclays Women’s Championship.

From Cavan to the Tyne, it has been a steady climb. Kiernan first left home comforts in 2018 when she departed Shelbourne for West Ham United, featuring 40 times over three seasons in east London. That move opened the door to the top level; this one feels like a statement of intent from a club intent on climbing it.

On the international stage, Kiernan has long been part of Ireland’s core. Since her debut in 2016, she has earned 38 caps, bringing the kind of big-game experience Newcastle have been keen to inject into a rapidly evolving squad.

“I’m really excited. I’m looking forward to a fresh start and meeting the fans,” Kiernan said after sealing the switch. “It was a dream of mine to come and play professionally and to go to a club like Newcastle, it really felt right when the contact came in.

“I would say I’m a quick attacker in behind, so I feel like I can bring my strengths and hopefully score loads of goals to help the team out.”

That pace is exactly what head coach Tanya Oxtoby wants at the top end of the pitch. For a side looking to play on the front foot, Kiernan’s ability to stretch defences and time runs beyond the back line fits neatly into the blueprint.

“Leanne brings a wealth of experience from the WSL, WSL2, and her national team to our squad and has shown in all those experiences the quality that she has,” Oxtoby said. “She adds versatility to the forward line, with her pace and intelligent movement making her a threat in the way we want to play. We are looking forward to what she will bring to our squad.”
