Juventus Pursues Jhon Lucumi as Colombian Prioritizes Project Over Pay

Juventus have moved to the front of the queue for Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi, edging towards a summer deal after securing an agreement in principle with the player.

The Colombian has made his intentions clear. Faced with interest from Chelsea and Manchester United and a richer offer from Nottingham Forest, he has kept Juventus at the top of his list throughout the process, viewing Turin as the natural next step in his career.

Choosing Juventus over money

The numbers tell the story of his decision. Nottingham Forest were reportedly ready to hand him around €1 million more net per season than Juventus. Lucumi turned it down.

Instead, he has accepted a five-year proposal from Juventus worth €2.5 million a year plus bonuses. For a defender entering what should be his prime, it is a statement: the sporting project, the stage, and the shirt matter more than the extra cash.

What convinced him? The pull of a bigger club. The chance to play European football. The opportunity to stay in Serie A, where he has already proved he can dominate. And the sense that Juventus truly pushed for him. Those close to the talks describe him as impressed by the club’s determination to bring him to Turin.

World Cup rise and Spalletti’s push

Lucumi’s stock has climbed sharply since his performances at the recent World Cup. Calm on the ball, aggressive without it, he stood out in a Colombia side that leaned heavily on his authority at the back.

One game in particular resonated: his display in a key group-stage clash where he kept Cristiano Ronaldo largely under control. That night turned heads across Europe and did not go unnoticed in Turin.

Luciano Spalletti quickly identified him as a priority target, seeing in Lucumi the kind of commanding, modern centre-back capable of anchoring his defensive line for years. From that point, Juventus’ interest hardened into a clear plan.

Bologna’s dilemma

For Bologna, the situation is delicate. They had initially protected Lucumi with a €28 million release clause, but that expired in mid-July. Now they value him at a minimum of €25 million, yet the clock is ticking.

Lucumi is heading into the final ten months of his contract. Push the price too high and Bologna risk watching a key asset walk away for nothing next summer. Accept too little and they undersell one of their most reliable performers.

Juventus have already tested the waters. An opening bid of €17 million was swiftly rejected by the Rossoblu, who know they still hold some leverage, even if it is diminishing by the week.

Deal-making phase begins

The real battle now lies between the clubs. Juventus are preparing a new offer designed to narrow the gap and probe Bologna’s resistance. One option on the table is to include Juan Cabal as part of the package, a compatriot of Lucumi who could sweeten the deal and ease the financial outlay.

With the player fully committed to the move and personal terms essentially in place, the pressure shifts to the negotiation room. Bologna must decide how far they can push. Juventus must judge how much they are willing to stretch for a defender they see as central to their rebuild.
