Jürgen Klopp Faces Injury Setback with Assan Ouédraogo

Jürgen Klopp’s first bump in the road as Germany manager has arrived before he has even named a squad.

With Nations League games looming against the Netherlands, Greece and Serbia, one of the brightest young talents in the country, Assan Ouédraogo, is suddenly a major doubt.

The 20-year-old RB Leipzig midfielder suffered a fresh shoulder injury in the 5-0 demolition of Hamburg on Sunday. He started the match, but his afternoon ended abruptly in the 35th minute after a heavy collision with Albert Grønbæk. He tried to carry on. He couldn’t.

For Klopp, the timing is brutal. His first Germany squad is due to be announced next Thursday, a symbolic moment in his new reign. Ouédraogo was widely expected to be in that conversation. Now, the discussion may be about how long he will be missing.

Inside Leipzig, alarm bells are ringing. According to Foot Mercato, the club fear the damage is linked to the same shoulder problem that kept Ouédraogo out for the whole of last August. That absence stalled his momentum just as he was starting to emerge; this one threatens to do the same.

Leipzig coach Martín Demichelis did not sugar-coat the situation.

“I think it's the same injury. Things don't look promising. We need him. He is an amazing talent, both for Germany and for our club,” he said, underlining both the concern and the regard in which the youngster is held.

The numbers tell their own story. Since joining Leipzig in 2024, injuries have stalked Ouédraogo’s progress. He has already spent more than 380 days on the sidelines, a staggering figure for a player of his age and profile. Now, early indications suggest he could again be ruled out for several weeks.

For Germany, it threatens to deprive Klopp of a gifted, forward-thinking midfielder at the very moment he starts to reshape the national team. For Leipzig, it is another unwanted interruption in the development of a player they see as central to their future.

The Nations League will go on without him if it has to. The real question is how many more stops and starts his young career can absorb before it finally takes off uninterrupted.
