Julian Alvarez Faces Hostile Reception at Metropolitano

Julian Alvarez walked back into the Metropolitano and straight into a storm.

The Atletico Madrid forward, pushing to leave the club this summer, was met with jeers and whistles from his own supporters as tensions over his future spilled into open hostility during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Villarreal.

Alvarez, heavily linked with Premier League champions Arsenal and Barcelona, has made it clear he wants out of the Spanish capital. Atletico, for their part, remain adamant he is not for sale. The stand-off framed the entire afternoon.

All week, the question hovered over Diego Simeone’s first home team sheet of the season: would Alvarez be involved at all? The answer came an hour before kick-off. His name was there, but only among the substitutes. Any hope that this signalled a thaw in relations vanished the moment he stepped onto the pitch to warm up.

The reaction was instant and ferocious. Boos rolled down from the stands, a pointed response from a fanbase that feels betrayed. When Simeone finally turned to him in the 66th minute, the noise intensified. Alvarez replaced a team-mate to a wall of whistles, a soundtrack that barely relented.

By then, the game had already swung once. Marc Pubill had put Atletico ahead, only for Villarreal captain Gerard Moreno to level from the penalty spot around the hour mark. The equaliser unsettled the hosts; the introduction of Alvarez did nothing to soothe the mood.

Villarreal then twisted the knife. Another penalty, this time converted by Georges Mikautadze, turned the match on its head and left Atletico staring at a damaging home defeat in their opening outing in front of their own crowd.

The pressure finally told in Atletico’s favour. Five minutes from time, it was another Argentine who salvaged them. Giuliano Simeone struck late to rescue a point and briefly lift the atmosphere, at least in sporting terms, as the contest finished 2-2.

For Alvarez, there was no such reconciliation. At full-time, as his team-mates walked towards the stands to applaud the supporters, he chose a different route. Visibly unhappy with the treatment he had received, he headed straight down the tunnel, chased by another round of jeers.

The stalemate on the pitch was clear. The one between player and club looks far harder to fix.
