Joshua Zirkzee’s Manchester United chapter is edging towards its final pages. The only real question now is where the next one begins.

The Dutch forward, once unveiled at Old Trafford as a statement signing from Bologna in 2024 for £36.5 million, has become one of this summer’s most intriguing transfer stories. According to The Athletic, multiple clubs have explored a deal, sensing opportunity in a talented striker whose Premier League adventure has never quite caught fire.

United are open to selling. Zirkzee is weighing his options.

Two unnamed Premier League rivals have already checked in, sounding out his situation and the conditions of a potential move. Ajax also made an enquiry, keen to understand United’s stance and whether a return to the Netherlands might be possible. That door, though, has all but closed. With Marcos Leonardo and Tolu Arokodare already through the door in Amsterdam, Ajax are not expected to push on with a deal.

The real noise is coming from Italy.

Juventus circle as Serie A calls again

Juventus are driving this chase. The Turin club are working on a loan agreement and, crucially, Zirkzee is understood to have given his approval to a return to Serie A.

It makes sense. Italy is where his reputation soared. His 2023-24 campaign with Bologna turned heads across Europe: a technically refined forward, comfortable between the lines, linking play, scoring important goals. That season helped earn him the move to Old Trafford and the weighty expectations that followed.

England has been a different story. The Premier League’s relentlessness has bitten hard.

Across the past two seasons, Zirkzee has managed just 19 starts in 56 league appearances. Five goals in the Premier League is a meagre return for a player signed to transform United’s attacking options, not just decorate them. The numbers tell the story of a stop-start spell: flashes of quality, but no sustained run, no sense that he ever fully settled into the rhythm or physical edge of the division.

United, faced with a player of clear ability who has never quite fitted, are now ready to listen.

A reminder of the talent

Yet the talent has not disappeared. It never does that quickly.

In pre-season, Zirkzee offered a sharp reminder of what he can do, scoring an excellent goal in a strong display against Rosenborg. It was the sort of moment that tempts coaches and sporting directors alike: the deft touch, the composure, the finish that looks far too easy for a player supposedly struggling.

Clubs notice those details. Juventus certainly have.

For them, a loan deal offers upside with limited risk: a player who already knows Serie A, who has proved he can thrive there, and who arrives with something to prove. For Zirkzee, it would be a return to a league that plays to his strengths rather than exposes his weaknesses.

At 23, this is not a career in crisis, but it is a crossroads. Stay and fight for a place in a system that has never truly suited him? Or step away from the Premier League glare and rebuild in surroundings that once felt like home?

The market is moving around him. Premier League interest simmers in the background, Ajax have stepped aside, and Juventus are pushing hardest. Zirkzee has given his green light to Italy.

Now it is down to United and Juventus to find an agreement. If they do, the next time Zirkzee walks out under the floodlights, it may well be in black and white, not red — and with a point to prove to the league he is leaving behind.
