Jorge Mendes orchestrates Milan transfer: Leao to Manchester City for Ruben Dias

Jorge Mendes is once again at the centre of Milan’s transfer market storm, with Sport Mediaset reporting that the agent is working on a sensational swap: Rafael Leao plus cash to Manchester City, Ruben Dias to San Siro.

Milan have been quietly – and sometimes not so quietly – looking for a way out of the Leao dilemma. The Portuguese forward is tied to the club until 2028, but the market has not responded to the price tag the Rossoneri want, with no club so far willing to meet the requested €50m plus add-ons.

On this latest front, Mendes spent the entire afternoon at Casa Milan, the club’s headquarters, working on the next move. According to Sport Mediaset, his new proposal is bold: Leao to Manchester City, plus a cash payment from Milan, with Ruben Dias heading the other way.

For Milan, it would mean sacrificing a marquee attacker to secure a defensive leader tailored to Amorim’s ideas. For City, it would mean cashing in on a centre-back who has been central to their recent success, to add a high-ceiling forward entering his prime.

Milan’s defensive rebuild and the Dias factor

Milan have already started reinforcing the back line, signing Mario Gila from Lazio. That alone will not be enough. Amorim’s football demands defenders who can defend space, read the game, and build from the back with conviction.

Ruben Dias fits that profile. The Portugal international, who turned 29 in May, has been one of the pillars of Manchester City’s back four since his arrival from Benfica in 2020 for €71.6m. His contract runs until June 2029, underlining how valuable City consider him.

He has also been linked with Real Madrid this summer, adding another heavyweight to the battle for his signature and underlining the scale of the task for Milan and Mendes.

A Leao-plus-cash package would be a dramatic way to try to break that resistance. It would reshape Milan’s hierarchy on the pitch and send a clear message about the club’s new axis under Amorim: Portugal at the heart of the project, from the touchline to the spine of the team.
