Joao Cancelo Returns to Barcelona on Permanent Deal

Joao Cancelo is back at Barcelona – this time to stay.

The Portugal full-back has signed a three-year deal at Camp Nou after terminating his contract with Al-Hilal by mutual agreement, ending a brief and winding chapter in Saudi Arabia and closing the book on his Manchester City spell for good.

Cancelo had joined Al-Hilal from City on a three-year contract in 2024, but never truly settled. He finished last season on loan at Barca, where he played a key role in their La Liga title win and quickly made it clear where he felt at home.

Now 32, he returns as a free agent and, for the first time, as a permanent Barcelona player.

"It's my dream," Cancelo said. "I'm where I want to be and I am very happy. I like the club, I identify with it. I feel loved here and I promise to give everything for this club."

For Cancelo, this is a full-circle moment a decade in the making. He first arrived in Spain in 2014, swapping Benfica for Valencia on loan. That move launched a European tour: a season on loan at Inter Milan in 2017-18, a permanent switch to Juventus in 2018, then a high-profile transfer to Manchester City in 2019.

His time in Manchester brought trophies but also turbulence. He finished the 2022-23 campaign on loan at Bayern Munich, then spent 2023-24 on a season-long loan at Barcelona. This latest agreement marks his third spell with the Catalan club, but the first where he is fully theirs.

Barcelona have been busy rebuilding around familiar faces. Earlier this week they also completed the signing of Cancelo's former City team-mate Rodri, agreeing a fee of about £65m for the Spain midfielder.

One returns for free, another arrives for a premium. Together, they reshape a Barcelona side that clearly knows exactly who it wants for the next phase.
