Joao Cancelo’s night at Camp Nou was supposed to be a celebration. Instead, it turned into an awkward walk back down the tunnel.

Barcelona’s players were introduced one by one to the crowd ahead of the Joan Gamper Trophy, each name booming over the speakers in the traditional curtain-raiser. Cancelo, wearing the No. 2 shirt and waiting in the tunnel, looked ready to join them. Then, suddenly, he turned and headed straight for the dressing room, visibly furious and leaving team-mates staring after him in confusion.

The explanation arrived quickly from local media. Spanish journalist Victor Navarro reported that Barcelona had planned to present Cancelo with the rest of the squad, only to pull the plug at the last moment because his registration was still not complete. Without that final step, the club could not officially put him in front of the Camp Nou crowd.

Behind the scenes, the situation is tangled in paperwork. Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal had already reached an agreement with Cancelo to terminate his contract, which was due to run until the end of the season. The deal was struck on the condition that the Portuguese defender waived the remainder of his outstanding salary. That cleared the way for his move to Barcelona – in theory.

In practice, the final documents for his switch had not been fully processed in time for the presentation. On paper, Cancelo was still an Al-Hilal player when his new team-mates were walking out to the roar of the fans. For a player of his status, used to the spotlight, it was a jarring and very public delay.

While Cancelo waited in limbo, another new signing stepped into the glare. Rodri drew the loudest ovation of the night as he was unveiled before kick-off. The Spanish midfielder has signed a four-year deal after Barcelona paid £65 million to bring him in from Manchester City earlier this week, and he arrives with heavyweight credentials, having been named the best player at the 2026 World Cup.

The Camp Nou crowd already know Cancelo well too. The 32-year-old spent the second half of last season and the entire 2023–24 campaign on loan at Barcelona, slotting into the side and quickly becoming a familiar figure on the right flank. His return, this time as a permanent signing, is expected to see him reclaim the No. 2 shirt for the coming season.

For now, though, he waits. Club officials are working to close out the remaining administrative details and formally complete his transfer from Al-Hilal. Once the registration is finally signed off, Cancelo will be free to step back onto Spanish soil as a Barcelona player again – and this time, he will expect to walk out of that tunnel to the welcome he was denied.
