João Cancelo Returns to Barcelona on Long-Term Deal

João Cancelo is back at Barcelona. This time, he’s not just passing through.

The Catalan club have confirmed that the Portuguese full-back has signed on a free transfer from Al-Hilal, ending his spell in the Saudi Pro League and committing to a long-term deal at the Olympic Stadium.

Barcelona’s statement was short and decisive: an agreement with João Cancelo, arriving as a free agent, contract signed through 30 June 2029. No fee, no loan clauses, no uncertainty. Just five years of commitment.

For Cancelo, it comes at a cost he was willing to pay.

The defender revealed he sacrificed part of his salary to force an exit from Al-Hilal and reopen the door to Barça, where he previously spent two productive loan spells.

“I’m very happy, I’m very pleased to be here, I’m where I want to be. I trained separately for a week. I told Deco that either I came here or I’d spend a year there without playing, still getting paid,” he said, laying bare the ultimatum he set for his own career.

“I gave up part of my salary, but it was either sign for Barça or nothing. It’s a very special club, I’m here to help and I hope to win many titles. We’re building a great team.”

This is not a romantic return without sporting weight. Under Hansi Flick, Cancelo is expected to open the season as first choice on the left side of defence, a role that will pit him directly against Alejandro Balde for minutes and responsibility.

At 32, Cancelo arrives as a seasoned, versatile option, comfortable inverting into midfield or pushing high to overload the wings. Balde brings pace and youth, Cancelo brings experience and risk-taking on the ball. Flick now has a genuine duel on his hands.

For Barcelona, who have spent the last few years juggling loans and short-term fixes, tying down a proven performer until 2029 signals something different: stability on one flank, and a clear vote of confidence in a player who insisted it had to be Barça or nothing.
