James Garner's Injury Concerns Ahead of Everton's Premier League Kick-off
Everton’s pre-season has been dealt an early jolt, with James Garner undergoing groin surgery that leaves his involvement on the opening weekend of the Premier League season in doubt.
The 23-year-old, one of Sean Dyche’s standout performers last term, went under the knife after a problem was picked up in the first days of pre-season. What initially looked like a routine issue has turned into a significant bump in Everton’s preparations.
Garner missed the opening friendly of the summer against Dundee, with the club initially saying the issue would be assessed over the following days. Those checks led to the decision for surgery, and the midfielder has now begun his rehabilitation at Finch Farm.
Everton confirmed the operation had been successful and set a tentative timeline that underlines both hope and jeopardy for Dyche’s plans.
“The Blues midfielder has begun his rehabilitation at Finch Farm and is progressing as expected, with a return to first-team training being targeted around the opening week of the Premier League season, subject to his continued recovery,” the club said.
The wording is cautious. Training around the first week of the season does not guarantee match sharpness, and Dyche knows as much. Garner’s energy, pressing and use of the ball were central to Everton’s survival push last season. Losing him, even briefly, would be a tactical headache at a time when the squad is already in flux.
The timing of the setback is awkward. Idrissa Gueye has already departed following the expiry of his contract this summer, leaving a hole in experience and defensive nous in midfield. Everton are understood to be in the market for another midfielder, and Garner’s situation only sharpens that need.
Pre-season has already given a glimpse of how stretched the options can look. Garner was one of several notable absentees from the squad that travelled to face Bolton Wanderers on Saturday. Tyler Dibling sat out with what the club described as a “minor knock”, while Hayden Hackney, one of three summer signings, was left out as he continues to be “integrated” into the squad after his move from Middlesbrough.
Dibling and Hackney are both expected to feature in the friendly at Stoke City on Tuesday. That offers Dyche a chance to experiment and assess alternatives, but it does not mask the reality: in Garner, Everton are nursing one of their most influential players back to fitness just as the season looms into view.
For a club trying to build momentum after years of turbulence, the sight of Garner back in full training on that opening week will matter almost as much as the first whistle itself.
