Jadon Sancho's Manchester United Career Concludes
Jadon Sancho’s Manchester United career is over. The club have confirmed they will not trigger the one-year option in his contract, clearing the way for the England winger to leave this summer alongside Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia.
The decision was confirmed on United’s annual retained and released list, published on Wednesday morning, and quietly closes the door on one of the most expensive and ultimately unfulfilled signings in the club’s recent history.
Sancho era ends with barely a farewell
Signed from Borussia Dortmund for £73m in July 2021, Sancho arrived as a marquee solution to United’s right‑wing problem. He leaves having barely figured in the first team over the past year.
He has not played a competitive game for United since 26 August 2023. His only appearance this year came in the 2024 Community Shield, when he was introduced as an 83rd‑minute substitute. A week after that August league outing, he was left out of the squad to face Arsenal, a decision that sparked a public stand-off with then-manager Erik ten Hag and effectively ended his involvement.
On the pitch, his story took a different turn. Sancho has spent each of the past three seasons away from Old Trafford, on loan at Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and Aston Villa. Remarkably, he has reached a European final with all three clubs, each in a different competition, and was part of the Aston Villa squad that beat Freiburg in last month’s Europa League final.
The irony is hard to miss: a player sidelined at United, yet a regular presence on some of Europe’s biggest stages elsewhere.
Casemiro and Malacia exits confirmed
While Sancho’s fate had lingered without official confirmation, the departures of Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia had already been made public.
Both were acknowledged on the pitch after United’s final home game of the season against Nottingham Forest on 17 May, with head coach Michael Carrick paying tribute in front of the home crowd. Their names now sit formally on the released list, underlining a summer of significant turnover in the squad.
Academy reshaped: departures and new deals
The clear-out is not limited to senior players. Youngsters Sonny Aljofree, James Bailey and Malachi Sharpe will also leave when their contracts expire on 30 June. Aljofree, who spent the first half of last season on loan at Notts County, departs after failing to make the jump into the first team.
United have moved to secure some of their next generation. The club have offered Albert Mills and Dante Plunkett professional contracts starting in July, a key step in their pathway from academy prospects to senior contenders.
There is, however, no update on England youth international Godwill Kukonki, who scored United’s goal in the FA Youth Cup final. His omission from the announcement leaves a question mark over his immediate future at Old Trafford.
Inside the academy, the next wave is already lining up. It is anticipated that Kai Rooney and Jacey Carrick will become scholars for the forthcoming season, continuing the family threads that run through the club’s modern history.
United’s list reads like a line in the sand: big names gone, high-profile projects ended, and a new crop edging into view. The real judgment will come not from who leaves, but from what this reset allows them to build next.
