Jones broke into Liverpool’s senior side in 2019 and grew from academy hopeful to reliable squad option. Across 228 appearances for the Reds, he produced 22 goals and 22 assists, a steady return for a midfielder often asked to adapt to different roles and systems under Jürgen Klopp.

Last season, 2025-26, he delivered three goals and three assists in 49 outings in all competitions. Not headline numbers, but enough to keep him firmly in the rotation for a club still fighting on multiple fronts.

Then came the first clear sign of change. Jones was absent from Liverpool’s last two friendlies, both played on consecutive Sundays against Como and Monaco. At the time, it raised eyebrows.
