Inter Milan Pursues Cristian Romero Amid Tottenham's Transfer Moves

Inter Milan have set their sights on Tottenham captain Cristian Romero, with the Serie A champions exploring what would be a complicated move for the Argentina defender.

Sky in Italy report that Inter, in the market for a new central defender, have Romero high on a shortlist that also includes John Stones, now a free agent after leaving Manchester City and attracting interest from Arsenal and Chelsea.

The attraction is obvious. A World Cup winner, aggressive, front-foot, 28 years old and under contract at Spurs until 2029. The problem is just as clear: prising him away will be expensive and structurally awkward for any buying club.

Inside Spurs, there is an expectation that Romero could be allowed to leave if a suitably strong offer lands on the table this summer. That is a significant shift around a player who has been central to Tottenham’s identity over the past five seasons.

He has made 124 appearances for the club, scored 12 goals and collected four Premier League red cards – a record that underlines both his influence and his volatility.

Romero’s relationship with a section of the fanbase frayed late last season. Sidelined by a knee injury, he drew criticism when he appeared ready to watch his boyhood club Belgrano face River Plate in the Argentina Primera Division Apertura final instead of being present for Tottenham’s decisive final-day trip to Everton.

The backlash was swift. The optics were ugly.

Romero did ultimately attend that crucial game, where Spurs secured their Premier League survival, but the episode lingered as a symbol of a club and a captain slightly out of sync.

Inter, sensing opportunity, are pushing on with their defensive rebuild. They also want a full-back in this window and have been tracking Romero’s team-mate Djed Spence. That pursuit, though, has cooled. The interest has not vanished, but the move has lost momentum, with Spence now sitting on a broader list that includes Monaco’s Vanderson and Feyenoord’s Givairo Read.

De Zerbi wants firepower to match spending spree

While Inter probe Romero’s situation, Roberto De Zerbi is still building his version of Tottenham. And he is not finished. Not even close.

The new Spurs head coach has been blunt: he wants two more attacking signings before the window closes.

Tottenham have already thrown down a marker in the market. Six signings, £237m spent, and a new club record smashed with the £100m arrival of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle. On top of that, £85m has gone on Mateus Fernandes and £52m on Jan Paul van Hecke, while Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka have joined on free transfers.

Big names. Big numbers. De Zerbi still sees gaps.

“The target now is to complete the attacking positions,” he said. “We want the first target, the first level, because anyway we are already important players, but I think to start the new project we need another couple of important players, for sure.”

He did not row back from that demand.

“It’s not finished yet, our transfer market window. We have to finish, we have to bring another couple of, maybe more, maybe not less, but a couple of players.”

Tottenham have torn up their wage bill, reshaped their squad and committed to De Zerbi’s high-risk, high-reward football. Now they need the goals and creativity to match the ambition.

Juventus circle Vicario as keeper carousel turns

While one Italian giant looks at Spurs’ captain, another is studying their goalkeeper.

Juventus are again considering Guglielmo Vicario as an alternative to their top target Emi Martinez, according to Sky in Italy. Juve have also started work on a possible deal for Parma’s Zion Suzuki, with a gap in valuation still to be bridged but not yet viewed as a deal-breaker.

The plan in Turin is clear: explore every angle and return to Vicario if the numbers can be bent to their advantage.

For Tottenham, the writing already looks to be on the wall. Vicario, expected to leave this summer, has not travelled on the club’s pre-season tour, officially due to a “minor injury”.

De Zerbi confirmed that absence. “Vicario is injured, not a big injury, but he needs to stay one week in London,” the Spurs boss said.

In a summer of churn, the goalkeeper department could yet be the next major piece to move.

Bergvall at a crossroads

Not every Spurs saga this summer involves a headline name. Lucas Bergvall’s future is quietly becoming one of the more delicate issues on De Zerbi’s desk.

Sky Sports News understands the Sweden midfielder is determined to leave in search of more opportunity. Nottingham Forest remain in the race, while Newcastle have also held talks with Spurs over potential figures.

Inside the club, the message is mixed. Sources insist Tottenham do not want to sell. At the same time, there has been no concerted push to convince Bergvall to stay.

De Zerbi has drawn a firm line: he only wants players who truly want to be at Spurs.

Asked about Bergvall and whether his inclusion in the pre-season squad hinted at a decision, De Zerbi was measured but clear.

“I have not spoken with Lucas yet. I will in the next days and we will make the best decision for the club, for Lucas, for me, for every one of us. Without problems, Lucas is a big, big talent.

“There will be a big competition to play because at the end, I think we will be two players for each position. If he wants to stay, I will be happy. Otherwise, we have to find a new solution with Johan Lange, with Vinai. It’s not my business after the decision to leave.”

The message is unmistakable: commit, or move on.

Kudus closing in, Kulusevski under careful watch

Not all the news is about departures. Some of De Zerbi’s most important “signings” this summer will come from the treatment room.

Mohammed Kudus is “very close” to returning after a muscle problem that has kept him out since early January. For a coach who craves dynamism and unpredictability in the final third, the winger’s comeback could be transformative.

“Kudus is very close,” De Zerbi said. “I think when we come back to London he will be available to start working with us. It’s a great thing for us. Kudus is another important player.”

He also reiterated the situation with Vicario and provided a cautious update on Dejan Kulusevski.

“Vicario is injured, not a big injury, but he needs to stay one week in London,” he repeated. “Kulusevski, we have to see in the next couple of weeks. He’s another important player. After one season, one complete season, without a game, we have to analyse better and better, don’t take risks, first of all for him and then for us.”

The plan is conservative: protect Kulusevski now to avoid losing him again later.

So Tottenham stand at an awkward, intriguing intersection. Inter are circling their captain. Juventus are sniffing around their goalkeeper. A gifted youngster wants clarity, and a demanding new head coach is asking for more firepower despite a quarter of a billion pounds already spent.
