Ibrahima Konaté Joins Real Madrid as New Centre-Back

Real Madrid’s sports city crackled with energy as Ibrahima Konaté walked through the doors that will define the next chapter of his career. No speculation, no drawn-out saga. Just a done deal and a clear message: the European champions are arming their defence again.

The operation is anything but cheap, though. Konaté will earn around 22 million euros per year, a salary that catapults him into the upper tier of the dressing room’s pay scale. The club see that as the going rate for a France international centre-back in his peak years.

At 27, he walks into a position that suffered badly last season. Injuries shredded Madrid’s defensive options, exposing the lack of depth in the heart of the backline. Konaté offers a direct answer to that problem.

He is a pure central defender, right-footed, and has never been used in another role since turning professional. No experiments, no conversion project. His game is built on a powerful frame and authority in duels, the sort of profile José Mourinho has often trusted to anchor his back fours.

Espanyol away: the first test

There will be no gentle bedding-in period. Konaté is already in line to feature this Saturday away to Espanyol at the Cornellà-El Prat, if Mourinho decides to throw him straight into the fire.

One place is locked. Rüdiger is an undisputed starter under the Portuguese coach. The intrigue lies next to him. The second centre-back spot is open, and Konaté’s first battle in white will be with the young Huijsen, who has impressed enough to be considered a genuine contender.
