Greg Docherty Leaves Charlton After Promotion-Winning Season

Charlton Athletic have parted company with captain Greg Docherty by mutual consent, drawing a sharp line under the midfielder’s short but significant spell in south London.

Docherty only arrived at The Valley in July 2024, yet in one breathless season he helped drag the club out of League One and back into the Championship, wearing the armband throughout the promotion campaign. He now departs as a free agent and can join another side outside the transfer window.

Across 90 appearances for Charlton, the 29-year-old scored five goals and, more importantly, became the on-pitch reference point for Nathan Jones’ side. His last outing came in last week’s Carabao Cup defeat away to Tottenham Hotspur – a low-key end to what had been a high-impact tenure.

“To be named captain of such an iconic football club was nothing short of a privilege,” Docherty told Charlton’s website as his exit was confirmed.

“I felt the weight and expectation that title carries, but I can wholeheartedly say I gave my absolute all to represent the club properly every single day with the utmost respect that I felt it deserved through the good and the bad moments.

“I'll always be grateful for my time at Charlton and everything the club has given me, but football moves fast and I'm now excited to see what the future holds.”

The Scot arrived with a well-travelled CV, having previously represented Hamilton, Rangers, Shrewsbury, Hull City and Hibernian. At Charlton, though, he found something different: responsibility, and a lasting place in the club’s recent history.

Nathan Jones was quick to underline that.

“He's a leader, an unbelievable pro and he should take his rightful place in the history of Charlton Athletic,” the manager said.

The admiration, though, sat alongside a hard football reality. Charlton are trying to kick on again, and that evolution threatened to squeeze their captain to the fringes.

“The tough thing is, we want to evolve, we want to improve on every level and it meant that Doc's game time was probably going to be more limited than he wanted,” Jones admitted. “We had open conversations around that and felt this was the best way forward.”

So a promotion-winning skipper walks away after just one season, with mutual respect intact but ambitions pulling in different directions. Charlton move on with their rebuild. Docherty, still in his peak years and now on the market, goes looking for the next dressing room to lead.
