Giuseppe Rossi's Advice for Marcus Rashford: A Fresh Start at Everton

Giuseppe Rossi believes Marcus Rashford should follow his own path out of Old Trafford – and that Everton could be the club to unlock him.

The former Manchester United and Villarreal striker, who rebuilt his career after leaving Old Trafford nearly two decades ago, sees clear parallels with Rashford’s situation and is convinced a fresh start in the Premier League is now essential.

Rossi backs Everton as Rashford escape route

Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona and is back at Manchester United with his long-term future still unresolved. While his spell at Camp Nou showed flashes of the old threat, there was no permanent deal, and uncertainty now hangs over his next move.

Rossi, speaking to Bet Brothers, did not sugar-coat his view of where things stand.

“Marcus Rashford needs to go to another club for his own sake. I think his time as a Manchester United player has run its course,” he said, adding that he no longer sees the forward as having the mentality required to be part of what United are trying to build.

“I don’t think he feels like a Manchester United player anymore,” Rossi continued. “You don’t want those sorts of players around your club, bringing down what you’re trying to build. It would be the best thing for everyone if they could all move on quickly this summer.”

Everton, in his eyes, would be one of the most intriguing landing spots. The Blues are still weighing up their options on the left, with CEO Angus Kinnear confirming this week that the club continues to monitor Jack Grealish’s situation after his loan spell on Merseyside. Grealish featured for Manchester City in their Community Shield defeat to Arsenal at the weekend, leaving his future no clearer.

With that uncertainty lingering, Rossi believes David Moyes could turn to a different marquee wide option down the East Lancs Road – Rashford.

Why Rossi doubts Italy and backs England

Rossi knows all about leaving United and rebuilding elsewhere. After arriving from Parma and scoring four goals in 14 games for United in 2004, he moved to Spain and became Villarreal’s all-time leading scorer across six years, despite two serious ACL injuries. Later spells at Fiorentina and Levante followed before he retired in 2023 at 36 and stepped into punditry.

That experience shapes his view on Rashford’s next step. A move to Serie A? Tempting on paper, but Rossi is unconvinced.

“Could Rashford go and reinvent himself in Italy as Scott McTominay has? It’s an interesting idea but I don’t see him thriving in Serie A. The league is too tactical,” he said. “I think Rashford still fits the English way of playing best, although truthfully he did well at Barcelona.”

For Rossi, the route back to his best form runs through England, not the continent.

“He needs a move to another Premier League club this summer,” he said. “It would be cool to see him at a side like Tottenham Hotspur or Everton. He needs a club where he’ll be given the chance to feel free to play his way and bring the team back some glory. He would do well in that sort of environment.”

Tottenham or Everton. Two very different projects, one shared promise: a leading role, a clean slate, and the chance to prove that Rashford’s story at the top level is far from finished.
