Ferran Torres has lit a fuse at Barcelona.

During the club’s tour of the United States, the Spanish forward chose the microphones, not the meeting room, to draw his line in the sand: he will not renew his contract unless he feels genuinely valued. At a club obsessed with controlling its own narrative, that public stance has gone down badly.

Inside the corridors of power at Barça, the reaction has been one of anger and disbelief. Not so much at the substance of Torres’ complaint, but at the way he chose to air it. Allowing him to drift towards a free transfer in 2027 is not an option. From the board’s point of view, losing him now for a reasonable fee is the lesser of two evils.

What role do they really see for him? What status? Those answers will only begin to take shape from September, when Barça plan to formalise their offer and open detailed negotiations.
