Fabio Vieira Joins Hamburg in €10m Deal

Fabio Vieira has ended his stop-start Arsenal spell, completing a permanent move to Hamburg in a €10m (£8.6m) deal that closes the book on a curious chapter in north London.

The 26-year-old midfielder returns to the Bundesliga club where he spent last season on loan, after a year back at Porto in 2024-25. Hamburg have seen enough to commit, Arsenal have seen enough to cash in.

Vieira arrived at the Emirates from Porto in 2022 as a technical, left-footed creator with clear promise and a sizeable reputation. He leaves with 49 appearances to his name but without ever fully nailing down a place in Mikel Arteta’s starting XI.

The last two seasons told the story. First Porto, then Hamburg. Each move took him a step further away from Arsenal’s long-term plans and a step closer to a permanent exit. Now that door has finally shut.

His sale is part of a wider clear-out. Arsenal have been actively listening to offers for several first-team players, and Vieira was firmly on the list of those available. Forwards Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli are also expected to depart on permanent deals as the club reshapes its attack and trims the wage bill.

While established names move on, one of the brightest academy hopes is heading out to learn his trade. Ethan Nwaneri, the highly rated Hale End graduate, is close to sealing a loan switch to Borussia Dortmund, a club with a strong track record of polishing young Premier League talent.

Vieira, though, gets what every playmaker craves: a settled home and a team built with him in mind. Arsenal move on, Hamburg commit, and a once-hyped project now has a very different stage on which to prove himself.
