England's Defensive Concerns Ahead of World Cup Clash with Mexico

England face a fresh defensive headache on the eve of their World Cup last-16 clash with Mexico after Djed Spence reported a muscular problem.

The 25-year-old, who impressed at right-back in the last-32 win over DR Congo, has complained of a niggle that has thrown his place at the Azteca Stadium into doubt. The nature of the issue remains unclear, and England will wait to see whether the Tottenham defender can start on Sunday night (Monday 01:00 BST).

It is the last thing Thomas Tuchel needed.

His back line has already been shuffled, and another enforced change would push England’s resources to the limit in one of the most hostile arenas in world football. If Spence is ruled out, Tuchel will be forced into yet another rethink on the right side of his defence.

Reece James is still not fully fit after a hamstring problem and remains a doubt. His status offers no guarantees, only another question mark in a position that suddenly looks fragile.

There is at least one boost. Jarell Quansah is back in contention after an ankle injury, picked up in the group-stage win over Panama, kept him out of the DR Congo tie. His return gives Tuchel an extra body and a different profile in defence, but also tempts a broader tactical shift.

The accumulation of knocks and doubts does more than affect personnel. It tugs at the shape of the entire side. With both recognised right-backs uncertain and Quansah available again, England’s injury problems could push Tuchel towards a change of formation, perhaps adding an extra centre-back to steady things in Mexico City’s altitude and intensity.

One way or another, England’s route to the quarter-finals may be decided as much on the teamsheet as on the pitch.
