Ebbsfleet United Set to Kick Off Season After Suspension Lifted

Ebbsfleet United will finally kick off their season on Saturday after the National League lifted the club’s suspension, ending weeks of uncertainty over the Kent side’s future.

The National League South club had seen their first six fixtures wiped from the calendar while they wrestled with serious financial problems. Those issues escalated when His Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) issued a winding-up petition over unpaid debts dating back to April, leaving the club’s very existence under threat.

The crisis eased last month when new owner John O'Leary completed a takeover. That deal allowed Ebbsfleet to settle what was owed to HMRC and pay their players in full, giving the club the financial footing it needed to present its case to the league.

In a statement on Wednesday, the club thanked supporters and staff for sticking with them through the turmoil, praising the “exemplary conduct” of players and employees during the enforced shutdown.

The reprieve is not without conditions. Ebbsfleet have been hit with a suspended six-point deduction by the National League’s compliance and licensing committee. That punishment will come into force if the club fail to meet a series of “obligations” that have yet to be made public.

Earlier this week, the sixth-tier side confirmed they had submitted detailed evidence to the National League proving that sufficient funds were in place to clear all outstanding liabilities. They also stated that HMRC had confirmed there were no remaining amounts due.

The league’s compliance and licensing committee met on Tuesday and agreed to lift the suspension, clearing Ebbsfleet to face Walton & Hersham on Saturday and, at last, begin their campaign.

The cloud has not completely lifted. A transfer embargo remains in place, blocking the club from registering new players while the league continues to monitor their situation.

In its statement, the National League said that while there were still “issues for the club to satisfy the league on, with regard to compliance with rules and regulations”, it had decided to lift the suspension with immediate effect, though Ebbsfleet “remains under a player registration embargo”.

The committee has demanded further specific actions from the club and will stay in close contact. Ebbsfleet are back on the pitch, but every step of their season will now play out under the sharp gaze of the regulators.
