Darwin Núñez's Future: Besiktas Loan or MLS Move?

Darwin Núñez’s Saudi gamble looks over after just one season. The Uruguayan striker, once one of Europe’s most coveted forwards, is already searching for the exit at Al-Hilal and pushing for a return to a more familiar stage.

He has reported back for pre-season after his holidays, still under contract until 2028, but his mind is elsewhere. The move to the Middle East, a €55 million investment by Al-Hilal last summer, has not delivered what he wanted: status, rhythm, or a starring role. With Karim Benzema entrenched as first-choice striker, Núñez has spent too long in the shadows.

He wants out. Now.

Besiktas step to the front

Into that frustration steps Besiktas. According to transfer specialist Sacha Tavolieri, the Turkish club are closing in on an agreement that would hand Núñez what he craves most: minutes and responsibility.

The proposal on the table is a loan until the end of the season. No bargain sale, no cut-price exit. Al-Hilal, still conscious of the €55 million they paid, are not ready to let him go cheaply on a permanent deal. A temporary move suits them. It also gives Núñez a chance to relaunch his career in a European league that still carries weight.

There is a catch. His salary in Istanbul would be lower than what he could earn in MLS. He knows that. Besiktas know that. They are selling him on football, not finance.

For a player who did not light up the 2026 FIFA World Cup and has seen his stock dip, the promise of being a central figure again might be worth more than another bumper pay packet.

MLS waits in the wings

The United States is calling as well. Atlanta United have already submitted an offer to Al-Hilal, keen to bring the former Liverpool forward to Major League Soccer.

On paper, MLS can offer him a strong financial package and a league increasingly attractive to big names. For now, though, Núñez is leaning the other way. His preference is clear: he wants Europe, its spotlight, its scrutiny, its edge.

Turkey offers that competitive edge. MLS offers comfort and profile. Núñez appears ready to choose the harder road back.

Barcelona watching, not acting

Hovering in the background are FC Barcelona. Núñez has been offered to the Catalan club and is seen as a potential Plan B in their search for a new striker. But that is all he is for now: an option, not a priority.

Deco’s focus remains firmly on a different name: Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid and Argentina. Barcelona want a top-tier No. 9 this summer and see Alvarez as that man. The problem? Atletico have no intention of selling. Every conversation hits the same wall.

As those talks stall, the market for alternatives is being explored. Núñez’s name sits on that list, but a move currently looks unlikely. There has been no concrete movement from Barcelona, no serious push, no indication that they are ready to turn interest into negotiation.

So Núñez waits, but not for long.

Besiktas are moving. Atlanta are ready. Al-Hilal are holding out for value. Barcelona, for now, are looking elsewhere.

The next decision will say a lot about where Darwin Núñez sees the rest of his prime: rebuilding his reputation in Europe’s demanding arenas, or reshaping his career path in a league still on the rise.
