Como Signs Roberta Picchi to Long-Term Deal Amid Cancer Battle

Como have tied Roberta Picchi to a new long-term contract just as the forward prepares to start treatment for breast cancer, turning a landmark summer for the club into something far more personal and profound.

The Italian side, who will make their women’s Serie A debut this season, confirmed that Picchi’s deal has been extended until the end of the 2027-28 campaign. The club framed the decision as part of a “continued commitment” to the 34-year-old, a clear signal that her future in the squad is not up for debate while she focuses on her health.

Picchi is set to begin cancer treatment with Como’s medical staff working alongside the specialists overseeing her care. The club moved quickly to underline that she will not face that battle alone.

“Everyone at Como 1907 is alongside Roberta and will give her and her family all the support they need during the months ahead,” read a club statement, which also urged respect for her privacy “as she focuses on her treatment and recovery.”

This is not just any player for Como. Picchi was a key figure in last season’s promotion charge, part of the side that surged to the Serie B title, finishing 11 points clear of Lumezzane to secure the club’s first-ever promotion to the top tier of Italian women’s football. Her goals, leadership and experience helped drag the team into a new era.

Now the contest looks very different, but Picchi’s competitive edge has not dimmed. On social media, she addressed the diagnosis with the same steel that has defined her career.

“Nothing should ever be taken for granted, and I feel fortunate,” she wrote. “It’s time to play my match, but I’ll be back even more determined.”
