Christos Tzolis: A New Force at Arsenal

Christos Tzolis has walked into Arsenal with the air of a man who doesn’t plan on waiting his turn.

Signed from Club Brugge in a £34 million deal this summer, the 24-year-old has wasted no time making his presence felt in Mikel Arteta’s squad, even as the club circle one of the biggest names in world football for his preferred position.

A statement preseason

Tzolis has been one of the standouts of Arsenal’s early work. Around London Colney, staff have noted how often his name sits near the top of the fitness charts. On the pitch, he has already offered a glimpse of end product, scoring in the 4-1 win over Girona on Saturday and driving aggressively from that left side that Arteta prizes so much.

This is not a player easing himself in. It is a player trying to grab the shirt.

He knows the context. Arsenal, Premier League champions and now operating at the very top of the market, are being strongly linked with a blockbuster move for Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior. Sources have told ESPN that Arsenal are interested and that Madrid are open to a sale this summer. It is the kind of rumour that would rattle most new signings, especially one eyeing the same flank.

Tzolis isn’t flinching.

“Obviously I'm confident as a player, so I don't think about the future and what the club will do in this position,” he told reporters. His focus is narrower, sharper. “I'm thinking how to improve and settle as fast as possible in the club because I have the opportunity to train directly with the team from the beginning of the season, to play the friendly games and then to go to official games.”

For him, this isn’t a holding pattern while the market moves. It’s an opening.

“It's a chance to play directly from the beginning and then it's up to me to show the qualities and what I can bring in the team. I'm pretty confident that I will show it in the next games.”

From Norwich lesson to Arsenal opportunity

This is not Tzolis’ first brush with English football. He spent two seasons at Norwich City, making his Premier League debut against Arsenal in 2021. That spell never fully ignited, but it hardened him. The pace, the physicality, the scrutiny — he has seen all of it before.

Now he returns at a very different stage of his career, stepping into a dressing room that has just scaled the summit of the English game. The demands are higher. So is the ceiling.

“It's a great opportunity to be a player of this kind of level team because it's one of the best in the world,” he said. The move has clearly hit him on an emotional level as well as a professional one. “That makes me very happy to be here and more hungry as well to develop.”

That word keeps coming back with him: development. Arsenal’s project under Arteta has been built on players who improve year on year, who grow inside a defined structure. Tzolis believes he has landed in exactly the right place for that.

“I think I'm in the right club to develop and to get to the highest level. I'm really happy that I have this opportunity and I want to take it.”

Fighting for the left

Arteta has been typically guarded in public about the Vinícius links but has already admitted he expects more movement from Arsenal in the market. The left wing, long a key weapon in his system, could yet become the most hotly contested piece of real estate at the club.

Tzolis is not naïve to that reality. He simply refuses to be intimidated by it.

He has the advantage of a full preseason, daily work with the core of the title-winning side and meaningful minutes in friendlies to build rhythm and trust. While the speculation swirls around names and numbers, he is putting down markers on the training pitch and in games.

If Arsenal do land Vinícius Júnior, the competition for places will be fierce. If they don’t, the club will need someone to seize that left side and run with it.

Tzolis is already sprinting.
