Chelsea Targets Manu Koné Amid Enzo Fernandez Transfer Talks

Chelsea’s midfield overhaul is edging into focus, and one deal now looks like the key that could unlock another seismic move at the top of European football.

Chelsea have reached an agreement on personal terms with Manu Koné and are now driving hard to bring the AS Roma midfielder to Stamford Bridge before the transfer window shuts, according to multiple reports.

FootballTransfers first reported that Chelsea had settled terms with the 25-year-old and were pushing to close a deal with Roma. French journalist Santi Aouna then backed that up, confirming that Chelsea had opened direct talks with the Serie A club over Koné’s transfer.

“Chelsea has officially made contact with Roma for Manu Koné. Discussions ongoing between the two clubs for the midfielder,” Aouna wrote on X.

The London club have now moved from talks to numbers. Journalist Nico Schira reported that Chelsea tabled an offer worth €65m (£56m) for Koné, despite Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini viewing the player as “non-transferable”.

Schira added that the decision would ultimately rest with Koné himself and Roma owner Dan Friedkin.

That stance from Roma has been tested again by a fresh update from Gianluca Di Marzio, who described the move as an “advanced” deal. Di Marzio suggested the fee under discussion is closer to £52m, indicating room for manoeuvre as the clubs haggle over the final price.

The same update also noted that Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is close to joining Roma on loan, a separate move that underlines the level of traffic between the two clubs in the closing stages of the window.

Enzo domino: City wait on Chelsea

All of this activity has a clear backdrop: Enzo Fernandez and Manchester City.

The Argentina international is pushing to join Pep Guardiola’s side, with City prepared to pay around £120m. At that figure, Fernandez would become City’s record signing and the most expensive midfielder in football history.

Chelsea are not standing in his way. They are prepared to sell, but only if two conditions are met: they receive their £120m valuation and they secure a replacement they consider worthy of anchoring their midfield.

Two names have been under serious consideration in recent days – Monaco’s Lamine Camara and Roma’s Koné. The focus has now narrowed on the Roma man.

If Chelsea complete the Koné deal, the first condition for an Enzo exit is effectively satisfied. The second is already on the table in the form of City’s huge offer. Put simply: Koné’s arrival would move Fernandez a giant step closer to walking through the door at the Etihad.

Roma’s resistance is the last major obstacle. Gasperini does not want to lose a key midfielder so close to the deadline, and the club have signalled that publicly by branding Koné “non-transferable”. But every player has a price, and Chelsea’s bids are testing exactly where Roma draw that line.

The clock is ticking on all sides. Chelsea need their replacement locked in. Roma must decide whether to cash in or hold firm. Manchester City are waiting, ready to trigger one of the biggest midfield transfers the game has ever seen.
