Chelsea Squad Numbers 2026/27: Key Changes Under Xabi Alonso

Chelsea have nailed down their squad numbers for the 2026/27 campaign, and the list comes with a few sharp twists that say plenty about status, trust and the club’s new hierarchy under Xabi Alonso.

Joao Pedro takes on Chelsea’s most loaded shirt

The headline move sits up front. Joao Pedro has walked straight into the number 9 shirt, abandoning 20 to take on the most scrutinised number at Stamford Bridge. Liam Delap, who wore 9 last season, slides down the list to 12.

It’s a clear statement. The Brazilian is no longer just another forward option; he’s being positioned as the focal point.

Defensive reshuffle and a vacant legacy number

At the back, Wesley Fofana steps into the number 3 shirt, left free after Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid. That switch frees up 29, which immediately lands on summer signing Pep Chavarria. A small detail, but it underlines how quickly new arrivals are being woven into the core squad.

Tosin Adarabioyo also moves. He trades the number 4 he previously wore for 38, with 4 now handed to another summer recruit, Valentin Barco. The Argentine is being dropped straight into a classic centre-back or full-back number, a sign of trust before a ball has been kicked.

Single digits for new boys, no numbers for big names

Two more fresh faces, Marco Palestra and Maxence Lacroix, walk straight into single digits as well. Palestra takes 2, Lacroix claims 5. Benoit Badiashile had worn 5, but the Frenchman, along with Axel Disasi and Marc Guiu, has not been given a number at all for this season after being left out of pre-season. Midfield shifts: Henderson steps into 14

In midfield, the changes continue. Dario Essugo moves from 14 to 16, making way for new arrival Jordan Henderson, who will wear 14. It’s a familiar number for a player used to carrying responsibility.

Club-record signing Morgan Rogers picks up 17, the shirt vacated by Andrey Santos following his move to Manchester United. Another subtle marker of expectation: 17 has often belonged to players trusted to influence games from deeper or wide areas.

Academy rewarded after standout pre-season

The pathway from Cobham remains visible. Academy prospects Reggie Watson, Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli and Tayo Subuloye all receive squad numbers: 31, 32 and 37 respectively. There is no official confirmation yet that they have been fully promoted to the first team, but their performances on the pre-season tour in Australia and Asia have clearly made an impression.

If Alonso leans on them during the season, this could be the year the next wave truly breaks through.
