Chelsea Faces Uncertainty Over Enzo Fernández Amid Manchester City Interest

Xabi Alonso has refused to promise that Chelsea will resist if Manchester City come hard for Enzo Fernández – and the uncertainty around the midfielder is hanging over the start of their season.

The club’s informal deadline for written offers of £120m for the 25-year-old has already come and gone, but the prospect of him leaving Stamford Bridge has not. Far from it. City, reshaping their midfield after Rodri’s move to Barcelona, have marked Fernández as a prime target and are weighing up whether to test Chelsea’s resolve before the window closes. Roma’s Manu Koné is also on their list, but Fernández is a central piece in their planning.

Chelsea know they are in a live situation. Fernández has made no secret of his desire to move on, and Alonso offered no assurances when asked whether the Argentina international would still be his player at the end of the window.

“Enzo is a Chelsea player,” the former Real Madrid manager said. “He’s a top player. He’s training really well since he started 10 days ago with the team. Very integrated, and we are happy with him. He’s getting ready for Monday.”

That “Monday” is Chelsea’s Premier League opener away to Fulham, where Fernández is expected to be in the squad. Even so, the questions are not going away. Asked directly whether the £106.7m signing had told him he wanted to stay, Alonso sidestepped again.

“He’s training really well. I see him with a good attitude. That’s what we want. Everyone is trying their best to prepare for the kick off of the Premier League.”

Behind those careful answers lies a clear reality: if Fernández goes, Chelsea will move for a replacement. They are strong admirers of Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and have already seen one offer for the 22-year-old rejected. Bournemouth have made it clear they intend to resist a sale this summer.

Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton is another option on Chelsea’s list, but that pursuit is complicated too. City have already had a bid for the England midfielder turned down by Palace, who are under no pressure to sell.

While the club wrestle with the midfield question, Alonso is also trying to streamline a bloated squad. Up front, Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap and Marc Guiu have slipped down the pecking order and are expected to move on if suitable deals arrive. Delap has no shortage of suitors, with Everton, Leeds, Ipswich and Nottingham Forest all monitoring his situation.

There is traffic in the other direction as well. Chelsea hold an interest in Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto as they look to fine-tune the squad’s balance, while Palace are pushing to reinforce their back line with a loan move for Axel Disasi.

Chelsea head to Craven Cottage with a marquee midfielder in the team, a superclub circling, and a manager refusing to offer guarantees. The window is open, the clock is ticking – and City have a decision to make.
