Carragher Warns Liverpool on Right-Wing Void Amid Barcola Talks

Jamie Carragher has never been shy about calling it as he sees it. This time, his warning is aimed squarely at Liverpool’s recruitment strategy.

As negotiations advance with Paris Saint-Germain over Bradley Barcola, Carragher has questioned whether the club are fixing the wrong problem. For him, the issue is not another left-sided attacker. It’s the gaping hole on the right.

Liverpool are exploring a deal for Barcola, a highly rated wide forward who prefers operating from the left and drifting inside. That profile immediately raised a red flag for Carragher when talk turned to the Frenchman as a potential long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah.

Asked on X by Sky Sports if Barcola could be the man to step into Salah’s role, Carragher’s response was blunt and instant: “No, he plays on the opposite flank!”

That was only the start. He went on to spell out the imbalance he sees in Liverpool’s forward options, highlighting that the squad is already stacked on one side of the pitch.

“LFC currently have three players who could play from the left in Rio/Gakpo/Wirtz & no one who plays from the right,” he wrote.

The message is clear. In Carragher’s eyes, Liverpool “desperately” need a right winger, a natural successor to Salah’s unique blend of goals, creativity and touchline width. Stockpiling left-sided forwards, however talented, does little to solve the most obvious tactical question hanging over Anfield.

As the Barcola talks continue, the debate Carragher has lit up will linger: are Liverpool targeting the right player, or the right side of the pitch?
