Cagliari Forward Yael Trepy in Intensive Care After Pool Incident

Cagliari forward Yael Trepy is in intensive care in Sassari after a serious incident in a swimming pool, the Serie A club have confirmed.

The 20-year-old Frenchman, one of the most promising youngsters in Cagliari’s squad, is being treated in hospital, with the club stating it is “in close contact with the medical staff and the player’s family”.

In a brief and carefully worded statement, Cagliari asked for “privacy to be respected” and said it will release further updates “as soon as possible”, without giving details of what happened.

Italian media reports say Trepy was rescued on Sunday in Porto Cervo, in northern Sardinia, after swallowing a large quantity of water in a swimming pool. According to those reports, doctors then placed him in a medically induced coma.

The news has stunned Cagliari, coming just days after Trepy featured in their most recent competitive match. He started Friday’s Coppa Italia tie against Arezzo, playing 54 minutes in a 1-0 win.

Trepy, a forward who scored once in eight Serie A appearances last season, joined Cagliari’s academy in 2022 from Paris-based side Union Sportive Creteil and had been edging his way into the first team.

Now his season, and perhaps far more than that, hangs on his recovery in a Sardinian hospital ward.
