Bruno Guimaraes is heading for Spain and Newcastle’s pre-season camp, not an Arsenal medical table.

On Sunday, the story looked different. Reports suggested the Brazil midfielder was on the brink of an £80million switch to Arsenal, with a medical pencilled in for Monday as the Premier League champions pushed to land one of the division’s standout midfielders.

By Monday morning, the picture had shifted.

Sky Sports reported that Guimaraes was actually flying to La Manga to link up with Newcastle’s squad at their training base, rather than diverting to London to finalise a move. The Chronicle added detail: the club captain left Brazil for Spain on a commercial flight on Sunday night, a trip agreed in advance with Newcastle.

So the player who is understood to have told Newcastle in July that he wants to join Arsenal is now back under the same badge, walking into a camp led by a new head coach and a clouded future.

Talks in Spain, questions in Tyneside

Guimaraes is expected to sit down in Spain with Matthias Jaissle, the man chosen to succeed Eddie Howe. Jaissle is already working with the squad despite his official confirmation being delayed by paperwork, a fitting backdrop for a club caught in its own administrative limbo over its most important outfield player.

Newcastle had started to brace for life without him. Recruitment discussions turned towards potential replacements, with Inter Milan and Croatia midfielder Petar Sucic among those linked as a successor to the influential skipper. The planning hinted at a club readying itself for a major departure.

Yet as pre-season sharpens, Guimaraes is back in black and white training gear, not undergoing tests in north London. For now.

Arsenal’s double Brazilian chase

His situation runs in parallel with another of Arsenal’s ambitious pursuits: Vinicius Jr.

The Gunners are preparing a bold move for the Real Madrid forward, who is locked in a contract stand-off in the Spanish capital with less than a year remaining on his current deal. The timing has encouraged Arsenal, who see an opening at the very top end of the market.

Just as with Guimaraes, the target is back with his current club, working, smiling for cameras, and keeping the market waiting.

All of this plays out against an oddly quiet summer in north London. Arsenal, preparing to defend their Premier League title, have made only two signings so far.

Christos Tzolis has arrived from Club Brugge in a £34million deal, a direct, left-sided winger with room to grow. Illan Meslier has come in on a free after leaving Leeds, adding depth and competition in goal.
