Barcelona Intensifies Training Before La Liga Opener

The scoreline in Basel – 5-2 to Barcelona – was the headline. The reaction the morning after told the real story.

Back at the Ciutat Esportiva, Hansi Flick’s squad dived into their second session of the week with the tempo clearly raised. The Joan Gamper Trophy is looming. Elche away on Sunday, the La Liga opener, looms even larger.

This is no longer pre-season for fitness. This is pre-season for points.

Xavi Espart back with the group

One new face returned to the grind. Or rather, returned from a deserved breather.

Xavi Espart, the latest La Masia name to start circulating around the first team, was back in full training after being given Monday morning off. The coaching staff had rewarded him with a short rest following a heavy summer: a demanding pre-season on top of his involvement at the U19 Euros with Spain.

He used it well. Against Basel, Espart impressed in midfield, showing the calm and personality that have fast-tracked him into Flick’s plans. On Tuesday, he was back in the thick of it, completing the full session alongside the senior squad as preparations sharpen for both the Gamper and the trip to Elche.

No easing in. No soft landing. Just another academy product thrown into the rhythm of elite work.

Pedri and Gavi stay in the collective rhythm

If Espart is the fresh name, the two most reassuring sights for Barcelona fans remain the same: Pedri and Gavi in the middle of the pitch, working with the group.

Both midfielders continued integrated into collective drills, taking another step forward after the club’s carefully managed adaptation plans. The approach has been clear: control workloads now to avoid problems when the real games arrive.

Pedri, back from his holidays and gradually increasing his intensity, is progressing as planned. Gavi mirrors that process, following the same structure and pace. Neither featured in the friendly against Basel, a deliberate decision as the staff prioritise long-term availability over short-term minutes.

They trained, they stayed with the group, and they moved through the session without incident. For Barcelona, that’s almost as important as any pre-season result.

Flick balances Gamper showpiece and Elche test

The session again forced Flick to walk a tightrope: prepare for the spectacle of Wednesday’s Joan Gamper Trophy while fine-tuning a team that must be ready for competitive football on Sunday.

The German coach is now deep into the final stretch of pre-season, the phase where experiments give way to decisions. Line-ups, roles, rotations – this is the week when ideas harden into plans.

Around the core of established stars, the young faces who have spent most of the summer with the first team remained very much involved. Alvaro Cortes, Brian Farinas, Ebrima Tunkara, Orian Goren, Jordi Pesquer, Hamza Abdelkarim and Eder Aller all continued to train within first-team dynamics, absorbing instructions and intensity in equal measure.

For them, every rondo, every tactical drill, every small-sided game is an audition.

Gamper night at Spotify Camp Nou

Next stop: Spotify Camp Nou.

On Wednesday, Barcelona host Egyptian side Al Ahly in the Joan Gamper Trophy at 8 p.m., the traditional curtain-raiser and presentation of the team in front of their own fans. Before the lights come on at the stadium, the work continues early: the squad will train again at the Ciutat Esportiva at 9:30 a.m.

One more morning to polish details. One more night to show the crowd what’s coming.

Then, the friendly gloss disappears and the table starts to matter. Elche await on Sunday. The decisive week has started; now Barcelona must prove that all this intensity translates into points.
