Barcelona Faces Challenge in Rodri Transfer Pursuit

Barcelona have run straight into Manchester City’s valuation of Rodri – and for now, there’s no way through.

The Catalan club tested the waters with a 50 million euro bid for the Spain midfielder during the current transfer window. City didn’t hesitate. The offer was rejected outright.

According to Spanish outlet Sport, Barça are prepared to edge that proposal up to 60 million euros for a player widely hailed as the standout performer at the 2026 World Cup. It still isn’t close.

City, who see Rodri as the heartbeat of their side and the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner, are treating the numbers very differently. As reported by Marca, the Premier League champions have set their line in the sand at 70 million euros. Below that, there is simply no conversation.

The relationship between the two clubs remains cordial, but sentiment doesn’t pay for replacements. And City know replacing Rodri will be brutally expensive.

High on their shortlist sit Ayoub Bouaddi of Lyon and Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández. Morocco international Bouaddi, in particular, would command a huge fee – AS estimates his price could reach 130 million euros, well over the 100 million euro mark in any case. Those figures explain City’s stance: if Rodri goes, he helps fund the rebuild.

Barcelona, though, are refusing to climb to City’s asking price. For a club still juggling financial constraints with big ambitions, 70 million euros for a 30-year-old midfielder is a step they are not ready to take.

The next move will be made in the boardroom. A meeting is scheduled between sporting directors Hugo Viana and Deco, as the two giants try to find any possible common ground. Right now, it looks thin.

Inside Barcelona, the hope had been simple: Rodri would be back under their umbrella by Wednesday, slotting into pre-season plans and reshaping their midfield. Instead, that scenario is slipping away.

Unless Barça can somehow drive down City’s demands and close the deal at speed, the midfielder will report back to Manchester to resume training – still a City player, still central to Pep Guardiola’s plans, and still just out of Barcelona’s financial reach.
