Barcelona's Bid for Julián Álvarez: Tension with Atlético Madrid

Barcelona have stepped out of the shadows in the Julián Álvarez saga – but only just.

Vice-president Rafael Yuste has confirmed the club tabled an offer for the Argentine forward, while carefully tiptoeing around the growing tension with Atlético Madrid.

The admission came after Barça’s Joan Gamper Trophy outing, when Yuste spoke to TV3 and was pressed on the club’s push for the Atlético striker, who has been strongly linked with a move to Catalonia in recent weeks.

Atlético’s stance is blunt: Álvarez is not for sale.

Reports in Spain, though, continue to suggest the player wants out, with Barcelona weighing up options to bolster Hansi Flick’s attack before the window closes.

Yuste knows the terrain is sensitive. Two La Liga rivals. A coveted forward under contract. A deal that could easily spill into a political row.

So he chose his words with care.

“We made an offer and that’s that”

Yuste refused to go into detail on Álvarez himself, repeatedly stressing Barcelona’s responsibility when talking about another club’s player.

“I don’t like to talk about players who aren’t ours. We’ve had a very good relationship with Miguel Ángel Gil and President Cerezo for years and years, and so these are things that I would say are part and parcel of football.

“We must maintain decorum and let common sense prevail,” he said, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.

The message was clear: Barça want Álvarez, but not at the cost of blowing up their long-standing relationship with Atlético’s hierarchy.

Yuste stopped short of revealing whether the initial proposal is still on the table or if Barcelona are readying a fresh move.

Then came the line that confirmed what had been rumoured for days.

“We made an offer and that’s that. We must focus entirely on what Hansi said recently: that we have a match on Sunday and we have to go out and win it.

“There are 38 matches in La Liga and each one is worth three points, so we’re fully focused on trying to secure our first win,” he added.

The priority, at least publicly, remains the pitch.

Transfer window still alive at Camp Nou

The Álvarez pursuit sits within a wider plan. Barcelona are not done in this market.

Yuste underlined that the club remain open to more signings and highlighted the work of the sporting department after sealing the arrival of Rodri.

“We have a great technical team, with Deco, Bojan and Alejandro Echeverría, who is also doing an exceptional job, and the transfer window is still open.”

The door, then, stays ajar.

Álvarez may be locked down by Atlético for now, but Barcelona have made their move – and with time still left in the window, the question is whether respect between the clubs will hold firm if the pressure on this deal continues to rise.
