Aston Villa's Bid for Taylor Harwood-Bellis Rejected Amid Konsa Exit

Aston Villa have seen an opening move for Taylor Harwood-Bellis turned away, with Southampton rejecting a bid worth around £18m plus add-ons for the defender.

Unai Emery’s side are braced for upheaval at the back. Ezri Konsa is set to join Arsenal in a deal expected to top £50m, and Villa have moved quickly to identify a successor. Harwood-Bellis, 22, sits high on that list.

Southampton, though, are in no mood to fold early. The south-coast club, who finished fourth in the Championship last season before the Spygate scandal abruptly ended their play-off hopes, are understood to value Harwood-Bellis at around £25m.

The centre-back has been at St Mary’s since 2023, initially arriving on loan, and has grown into a key figure. His progress was underlined this year when he earned his first England cap in a 2024 Nations League match against the Republic of Ireland.

Harwood-Bellis came through Manchester City’s academy but never made a first-team appearance, instead building his reputation away from the Etihad. Now, with Premier League clubs circling, Southampton know they hold a valuable asset.

Villa’s interest comes in the middle of a major reshaping of a squad that only three months ago lifted the Europa League. Since that triumph, they have sanctioned high-profile exits: Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, Morgan Rogers to Chelsea and Lucas Digne to Paris St-Germain.

There could be more. Goalkeeper Emi Martinez and Premier League-era record scorer Ollie Watkins have both been linked with moves, adding another layer of uncertainty to a dressing room already in flux.

Villa have not stood still in the market. This week they brought in goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and left-back Matteo Ruggeri, adding to earlier summer arrivals Joao Gomes from Wolves and Johan Manzambi from Freiburg.

The next move is clear. With Konsa on his way and the back line about to be torn up, the question is whether Villa return with a higher offer that finally tempts Southampton to part with Harwood-Bellis.
