Arsenal Targets Gibraltar International Scanlon in Youth Recruitment Drive

Arsenal’s youth recruitment push has zeroed in on 19-year-old winger Scanlon, with the club treating the Manchester United youngster as a serious target in their latest reshuffle of the academy pathway.

The Leicester-born wide man, who qualifies for Gibraltar through his mother, already has 24 senior international caps under his belt and spent the second half of last season on loan at League Two side Swindon. That blend of senior experience and developmental upside has put him firmly on Arsenal’s radar.

The north London club are understood to be relaxed about personal terms, with Scanlon keen on the move. The real work now lies in negotiations with United over a fee, but Arsenal believe the deal could gather pace over the next 72 hours.

Key Figures in the Pursuit

Inside Arsenal, two figures in particular have driven the pursuit.

• Chris Perkins, who arrived at the club in 2023 as a professional development phase scout, has tracked Scanlon’s progress for years. Perkins was head of academy recruitment at Derby County for six seasons, during the period when Scanlon came through the age groups there, and has long rated the winger’s potential.
• David Horseman, appointed this week as the new head coach of Arsenal’s Under-21s, has also pushed strongly for the move. Horseman joined the club a year ago as elite player development coach, taking charge of the U19s in the UEFA Youth League and the U21s in the EFL Trophy. Before that, he had a brief spell at United, where he worked directly with Scanlon and came away impressed.

Those overlapping recommendations have given Arsenal’s interest extra weight, turning what began as monitoring into an active attempt to strike a deal.

And Scanlon may not be the only player heading south from Manchester.

Double Swoop on United

Arsenal are exploring the possibility of a double swoop on United, with right-back Habeeb Ogunneye also on their list. The defender spent part of last season on loan at Newport in League Two before United recalled him in January, and he fits the same profile: young, tested in senior football, and viewed as a project with first-team potential down the line.

Arsenal’s hierarchy want the academy and development squads stocked with players who can make that jump. Over the coming days, the pace of talks with United will reveal just how far they are prepared to go to make this new youth-first vision a reality.
