Arsenal have gone on the offensive in the youth market, launching a bold move to sign Manchester United prospects Sam Mather Scanlon and Habeeb Ogunneye in what is fast becoming a full-scale academy tug of war between the two clubs, according to The Telegraph.

Arsenal hit back after losing Obi and Heaven

The push for Scanlon and Ogunneye comes with clear context. Manchester United have already raided Arsenal’s youth set-up in recent seasons, landing Chido Obi and Ayden Heaven. Those deals stung in north London. This one is designed to sting back.

Arsenal’s hierarchy believe they can tempt both Scanlon, 19, and Ogunneye, 20, away from Old Trafford permanently this summer as part of an aggressive recruitment drive aimed at reshaping the club’s academy.

Ogunneye, a defender, had a longer run. He featured 21 times for Newport County before returning to United in January. That stint gave him consistent game time, but it has not translated into a clear pathway at Old Trafford.

Now, the pair are understood to be ready to cut ties with United on a permanent basis to accelerate their development. Arsenal have moved quickly to exploit that hesitation and offer a different route.

Pascal De Maesschalck has arrived as Arsenal’s new academy head, replacing Per Mertesacker. His appointment has been followed almost immediately by a flurry of moves for domestic talent, signalling a shift in tone and tempo.
