Arsenal Targets Manchester United Prospects Scanlon and Ogunneye

Arsenal’s youth recruitment drive is about to cut straight through Old Trafford.

The club are closing in on a double deal for Manchester United prospects James Scanlon and Habeeb Ogunneye, with one move already at the medical stage and the other progressing fast in talks.

Standard Sport understands Scanlon has been identified as a serious target as Arsenal sharpen their focus on elite young talent. Discussions with United are ongoing, but there is confidence in north London that a deal can be struck, with personal terms not expected to cause any issues.

The situation with Ogunneye is even more advanced. Arsenal are set to sign the 20-year-old defender on a free transfer, with United inserting a 40 per cent sell-on clause to protect their long-term interest. His medical is booked for Thursday and an announcement is anticipated over the weekend.

Once the paperwork is done, Ogunneye will join up with Arsenal’s U21s and be handed the chance to train with Mikel Arteta’s first team, a clear signal that the club see a pathway for him if he impresses.

Who is James Scanlon?

Scanlon is not your typical academy hopeful. At 19, he already has 24 senior caps for Gibraltar, qualifying through his mother, and has been exposed to international football in a way most teenagers can only imagine.

He has already written his name into UEFA’s record books. At 17 years and 346 days, he became the youngest goalscorer in UEFA Nations League history when he struck in a 2-2 draw against Liechtenstein in September 2024.

On the pitch, the Leicester-born winger offers versatility and direct threat. Comfortable on either flank and capable of operating as an attacking midfielder, he brings the kind of positional flexibility Arsenal increasingly value across their squads.

Scanlon came through Derby County’s academy before United moved to secure him in February 2021. He quickly rose through the ranks at Carrington, breaking into the U18s within a year and then stepping onto the European stage in the UEFA Youth League.

The 2023-24 campaign marked his real breakthrough. He featured in that Youth League, earned minutes with United’s U21s, trained with the first team under Erik ten Hag and capped it all by signing his first professional contract in May 2024.

His senior debut for United has not yet arrived, but he edged close. Scanlon made a senior matchday squad for the first time in March 2025, named among the substitutes for a Europa League tie against Real Sociedad.

To accelerate his development, United sent him out on loan for the second half of last season. Scanlon joined Swindon Town, turned down interest from clubs across Europe and scored once in six appearances. Swindon finished ninth in League Two, missing the play-offs by a single point, but the spell gave Scanlon a taste of senior football and the physical demands that come with it.

Who is Habeeb Ogunneye?

If Scanlon brings international experience, Ogunneye brings a different edge: a homegrown defender already hardened by senior minutes in England.

Born in Hackney, he has come right through United’s academy system and made his U18 debut at just 15. He is primarily a right-back, keen to push forward and contribute in the final third, and he took a significant step last season with a loan move to Newport County.

Ogunneye made 21 appearances for Newport in all competitions, collecting valuable minutes in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup and learning the realities of senior football far from the spotlight of Old Trafford.

One of those outings came against Arsenal’s youngsters. In the EFL Trophy last season, he faced an Arsenal U21 side featuring Marli Salmon. On that night, Ogunneye conceded a penalty, which Andre Harriman-Annous converted to level the game. It was a small moment, but one that underlined how closely Arsenal’s staff have already seen him at work.

His progress has not gone unnoticed at international level either. Despite his age, Ogunneye has become the subject of a tug-of-war between England and Nigeria, who he can represent by birth and heritage respectively. No final decision on his allegiance has been announced, but England U21s head coach Lee Carsley has already earmarked him as a potential star of the future.

Now Arsenal are moving to bring him into their system, with United keeping a watching brief through that hefty sell-on clause.

If both deals are completed as expected, Arsenal will have raided a direct rival for two highly rated prospects in the space of a few days. For a club intent on building a conveyor belt beneath Arteta’s first team, the question is no longer whether they are serious about youth — it is how quickly Scanlon and Ogunneye can turn promise into pressure for places.
