Arsenal's Pursuit of Julián Álvarez: Will He Choose Barcelona?

Arsenal are racing the clock. The money is on the table, the exits are lined up, but the striker they want is looking the other way.

The Argentina forward returned to Atlético Madrid training on Sunday after being left out of the squad for the win over Sevilla, a decision that only intensified speculation over his future. Arteta is understood to have spoken directly to Álvarez last week, trying to lure the former Manchester City striker back to the Premier League. The response was blunt: his priority is Barcelona, and only Barcelona.

That stance collides head‑on with Atlético’s position. The Madrid club insist they will not sell to their La Liga rivals and remain determined to keep Álvarez, who joined from City in 2024. They have already lined up Jonathan David from Juventus on an initial loan with an option to buy next summer, but see Álvarez as central to their plans and are digging in.

Barcelona, though, are not out of the picture. They have agreed an £8.6m deal for Jesus, who has slipped down Arsenal’s pecking order behind Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyökeres and is now into the final year of his contract. That move gives the Spanish champions a cut‑price option through the middle, but it does not close the door on Álvarez. After selling Ferran Torres to Paris Saint‑Germain, Barça still want another attacker and are said to be refusing to abandon the chase.

So Arsenal wait. And hope.

The north London club remain optimistic that the 26‑year‑old could yet be persuaded to change his mind, but the recruitment team are working on parallel tracks. Several other forwards are being monitored as contingency options. Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye featured on their shortlist, yet that avenue is close to closing, with Tottenham in advanced talks over a £60m deal for the Senegal international. Morgan Rogers has already slipped away to Chelsea, while an audacious move for Vinícius Júnior came to nothing when the Brazilian signed a contract extension at Real Madrid.

Arteta has at least begun the rebuild on the flanks. Christos Tzolis has arrived to cover the left‑hand side after Leandro Trossard’s departure, but Martinelli’s imminent move to Al‑Hilal for a club‑record £56m fee will rip open another hole in the squad. Eberechi Eze can operate there, offering a different profile and creativity from the wing, yet losing a player who scored six times in last season’s Champions League underlines how radical this attacking overhaul has become.

Martinelli is due to undergo his medical on Monday after being left out of the squad for the opening‑weekend win over Coventry. His £56m switch surpasses the £40m Liverpool paid Arsenal for Alex Oxlade‑Chamberlain in 2017, setting a new benchmark for outgoing transfers at the Emirates and signalling just how far the club are willing to go to reshape the front line.

At the other end of the scale, Vieira is set for a quieter exit. The midfielder, who spent last season on loan at Hamburg, is poised to join the German club permanently in an £8.6m deal.

Arsenal have cleared the decks. The funds are there, the spaces in the dressing room are opening up, and the system is being bent to accommodate a new focal point. Now everything comes down to one decision in Madrid: does Julián Álvarez stick to his Barcelona dream, or does Arsenal’s gamble finally turn in their favour?
