Arsenal Miss Out on Malick Fofana as Sunderland Seals Deadline Day Deal

Arsenal’s search for a new winger has taken a late and painful hit, with Malick Fofana heading to Sunderland after the Gunners refused to meet Lyon’s demands.

Mikel Arteta’s side opened talks with the Ligue 1 club on Monday, having identified the 21-year-old as a key option to bolster their attacking depth. Fofana was understood to be open to a move to north London and, according to Fabrizio Romano, even held discussions with Arteta.

Then the deal stalled.

Reports from Santi Aouna and David Ornstein say Arsenal walked away from Lyon’s asking price of around €40million. That hesitation opened the door for a Premier League rival to pounce.

Sunderland moved decisively. The Wearside club agreed a €30million fee plus add-ons, a package that could rise towards Lyon’s original valuation and was enough to close the deal. Fofana will now travel to the north east for a medical ahead of a Deadline Day move that few saw coming at the start of the window.

It is a significant blow for Arsenal, not just symbolically but structurally. The squad is already light on the left flank after the summer exits of Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, leaving Arteta short of natural options in that channel.

The situation is further complicated by Ethan Nwaneri’s impending loan to Borussia Dortmund, with the youngster set for a medical before completing his move. Christos Tzolis has arrived from Club Brugge earlier in the window, but the plan had been to add another high-impact wide player.

Fofana had attracted interest across the league. Crystal Palace were close to an agreement with Lyon earlier in the summer, yet the winger did not want a switch to Selhurst Park. Arsenal’s interest, and the prospect of working under Arteta, appeared to shift the picture.

Instead, it is Sunderland who have acted with conviction when it mattered most.

Arsenal, still chasing depth and dynamism out wide, are left to weigh up whether their stance on the fee was shrewd business or a missed chance that could echo through the rest of their season.
